73' Winnebago Brave

Hey guys,



I purchased a 73' Brave on a Dodge chassis-RM-300 - the RV is in bad shape and I paid next to nothing for it but was told it ran well. It will idle all day long in park and run as if brand new. As soon as you place any load on the engine it sputters badly and stalls. It will then immediately re-fire and sometimes if I play with the manual choke, it will kick in and go... ... ... but only for a short burst. It appears to be fuel related at times but also sounds like an ignition failure. It has a new cap and rotor and wires and I just replaced the ballast resistor. Still not any better! I sprayed carb/choke cleaner and that appears to have helped. Do I try a new coil and/or fuel pump or get the carb rebuilt? The RV was just driven about an hour down the interstate onl 2 weeks ago and ran fine... ... ... so it is likely the carb is good. I need some help here!

I had a 73 Dodge MH, 440ci, 1050cfm Carter Thermoquad. Carb needs rebuilt if this is what you have... (possibly a 318, carter 2 bbl?)



Most of the rebuilt carbs you get from NAPA, Motion, etc, are junk. I found a guy who did nothing but rebuild carbs, mine ran like a top after that.

Yeah... ... . it's a D-18 Brave - 318-2 bbl. I will try and have it rebuilt and try that. A friend was saying it was a coil... ... . at this point I am just throwing parts at it but it is still cheaper than having it towed

Did you try a fuel filter??? If they drove it for an hour or so with old gas it could have sucked some crap into the filter. Sounds like fuel starvation to me.

Just a thought before you tear the carb off.



Also make sure you get the right filter, it may have two if it has a genset. Most RV fuel tanks have two feed lines, even the new ones.



As far as the ballast resistor goes they usually failed all at once, used to carry a spare in the glove box at all times with any of my old Mopar's. Put your take-off resistor in the camper somewhere, you will need it at some point. :-laf

You can rebuild that carb. yourself. It's about as simple a carburetor as you'll ever see.

I have to work tomorrow but I picked up the rebuild kit today. I will try doing it myself and I also got a coil for it and a tach to hook up. I will also get a fuel filter for it. I really don't mind throwing parts like this at it because they are maintenance items anyway. Let you guys know what kinda luck I have tomorrow evening after I get off work. Thanks for the help!! I'll post some pictures when the weather clears up!
