Stealer (Kerry) wants $74. 00 for fuel filter change. I couldn't beleive it. Told him no way. He then tried to justify cost as his is better filter than fleetguard. I was under impression the were the same. Waddaya think???

I thought I read somewhere that the Mopar filters are just the Fleetguard painted black.

I would guess that the break down on that was the filter cost plus about 1/2 hour labor to change it.

It seems a little high but as far as dealer pricing goes it is about what I would expect from them.

Don't believe it... .

Go to Geno's, a big rig shop or Cummins and buy the Stratapore FS19579 fuel filter for ~$10-12. 00. I doubt the dealer filter is the Stratapore, but whatever it is, it's just a re-labeled Fleetguard.

While you're at it, get a Fleetguard Stratapore oil filter LF3894 for ~$7-10. 00.

Changing your own filters is not that difficult. $74. 00 is obscene.

The filters are the same. Both manufactured by Fleetguard. Changing the fuel filter is too easy. This is why we call them Stealers:p

E7mack96,

Sent you a PM about a deal we get on filters and more :D

On aa bad day changing a fuel filter will take 10 min. 8 of which is hunting down a wrench or socket to remove the filter cover.

unscrew the top.

slowly remove the old filter.

attach the new filter to the cover.

slowly immerse it in the fuel.

Tighten cover.

start truck.

under $10

It's the same exact filter just lots more expensive if that makes it better I guess I'd have to say go for it, but it isn't better so tell 'em to take a walk.

Then there's the "Minimum Labor Charge"

I understand that if a mechanic has to do the work the've got to charge the 1 hour minimum but for crying out loud you could train a chimp to change the filter. I suspect that at a lot of stealerships they have lot monkeys (trained chimps) doing the fuel filter changes...

No thanks give me a wrench, a bucket to stand on, 5 minutes and I'll do it myself.

Mack, I feel soooo old. I remember going to the TA truckstop, and getting an oil change (56 quarts) and 3 spin on filters done for $99. 00.

I get my fuel filters from Geno's. I think theyre the same as yours. Theyre about $15. 00.

I was tired of getting ripped off also. Homebod at a meeting changed mine the last time after eating breakfast. I think it took 10 minutes and actually looked fairly simple. I think if you buy the filter they should put it on. It was that easy.

Man, you were getting a good deal!

My dealer, Tacoma Dodge, wanted $99. 99 for my fuel filter change!:--) I, as politley as I could, told them they could f*** themselves and never went back there again...

What we learn on this site more than pays the dues, dosen't it:D Back in my Powerstroke days, the Ford dealer wanted 32. 50 for the FL1995 oil filter, just about S@#& when I saw the same Motorcraft filter @ Walmart for $9. 95. Then I found Diesel Injection Service in Texas (they are big on Powerstroke stuff). The $$ you save by doing it your self can easily justify a little extra for some goodies for your truck:D

Come on down

Hey E7mack96 - Come over to the house some day and I will change it for half of that $74 and will even buy the filter and beers :D

BTW - My local stealer wanted $54 plus change just for the filter - I would hate to ask what the charge was to install:rolleyes:

that place gives "kerry's" a bad name, kinda freaked me out at first, thought I was being blamed for something... . :D , theres no real reason not to do your own fuel and oil filter changes, its not remotely difficult, dang, I could open up a shop just for filter changes at that price and make a good living... . :--)

I hear U

I usually do it myself, it was at 30,500 miles. Is was due for fuel filter. I thought (big mistake, lol), that if the price was reasonable, i'd have them do it while they were fixing the front end. Guess I'll be doing it myself tomorrow.

I get my 3500 RAM serviced at "Pro Fleet"(a Jiffy-Lube" for 'big rigs')

They change my oil(Dello) and my oil filter and fuel filter for less than $50, and have me back on the road in about 20 minutes. That's including lube and tire air fillup.

That's cheaper than I can do it myself.

Does the $74 include the shot of ether that they will probably use when they can't get it started after they change the filter. I cringe at the thought of someone else changing my baby's filters.

My Dodge dealer charges $43. 95 for the filter and $15. 00 to install. That includes checking out my truck and I feel it is worth paying the dealer for this work because of the relationship it builds with the dealer when when/if need warranty work done. Of course I have a Great dealer Aurora Dodge in Aurora Missiouri. :D

Pit Bull... . I would ask your dealer if he would install a filter you brought for $15?? If so go to Cummins and get a $15 filter and get it changed for $30 total.....

Good suggestion, but I don't care about the extra cost. My Dealer is at the low range of what Dealers charge for service. I want them to know me as a good customer. I bought my truck from them and they service it. They know I take very good care of my truck and they are one of DC's higher volume CTD Dealers with very good mechanics that know their stuff. I want them to know that I will buy future trucks from them and have them service them as long as they continue to take care of me. I feel that the Dealer you buy from is as important as the truck you buy. If you are not willing to do business with them and let them make some money then don't get upset when you have a problem and you are not their number 1 priority. You know the old Win-Win relationship :D
