The guy I bought my 04 from just drove his new 6. 7 up from the states and was mildly happy with the truck until he whipped out to do a quick pass and hit the SEVENTY SEVEN MPH limiter. Has any one else encountered this? Will Dodge up the speed after break in or are there any after market tunners that will raise the ceiling with out Dodge ripping up the warranty ?

Love my 04 -- the 96 is now excess baggage--for sale!Oo.

FROM: monte, Dont know what you are talking about, I have a 2007. 5 with

the 6. 7 engine and have had this teuck up to 130 MPH. Never heard of a 77 mile limetyer.

The cab and chassis 4500 and 5500 have this speed limiter. Is anyone out there willing to try and unhook the speed sensor at the diff. and use their GPS to see if the limiter will be defeated? The check engine light will come on and the cruise of course will not work also while unplugged.

This speed limiter is what has stopped me from buying the 4500 I test drove. I didn't want to be passing someone on a two lane road and hit that limiter.

The engine will not function correctly with the speed sensor disconnected... . I talked to a Cummins dealer today, since I wrote the post above... he said the firmware they have is for the 6. 7L used in other trucks... that Dodge has kept the software to the pickup controlled to dealers only... But he said bring the truck by and he'd plug into it and see what happened...

We are at least a week away from doing this. . BTW our 5500 was at the dealer... we asked the tech to make the change for us... he said he had no clue how to look for it or change it... and he's been trained on the 6. 7L... so they haven't told him about it... .

I can only assume that the industrial portion of the software and firmware in the test computer will talk to the 6. 7L and is most likely the same software... .

Hope this helps.

I believe this limiter is there on cab chassis due to the tire selection, per the tire mfg's they do not want their products spinning faster than 75mph

You can not change the vehicle configuration information with the StarScan or StarMobile tools. It can only be done with engineering tools. And even if you could, I would not want to be the one involved as the attorneys will have a field day after the accident that inevitably will happen, just because there was an illegal change!

On the large Cummins, the dealer can program a number of parameters including RPM limit, speed limit, idle shut off time, and even horsepower.

I would like to think that the software can be reprogammed, but I'm not at all certain.

Several of our big trucks with the big Cummins engine had been set to 80 MPH somewhere along the way. Since we run Arizona with a 70 MPH limit, I had the speed reduced in the trucks to 72 MPH. I'm paying for the fuel so I don't need them screaming down the road.

Good point jimnance, the bigger engines can be tuned per someone's request... I think this is there as a lot of times the driver is not the owner, so as a owner I want better MPG, so limit the speed. On the Dodge Ram product most (not all) drivers are the owners, so I think this was left out for that reason. But, on the big stuff (if I recall) all you could go was lower (RPM, HP, speed) not higher, so if DC would enable a change it would only be lower than 75... . and who the heck wants that!?:)

I have driven two rental moving trucks with speed limiters at 70 and 75, not only is it a PITA on 75 mph freeways but its a safety hazard... While speeding to pass ins't legal, sometimes you need that extra 10-20 mph to pass, especially if your towing a large trailer...

Tires that can only do 75mph? That seems really low... And again very unsafe.

Hopefully someone can find a way to disable it.
