Top 10 reasons ...

I am in the market for a 7mm Rem mag rifle and was looking for input as to which brand of rifle would be the most accurate for mid to long range shooting,200-500yds?

I Know that Savage seems to be the action of choice for long range competition shooters but that is for custom built guns. I do not like the savage rifles due to being too light weight.

I am a fan of Remington and Ruger as I used to have a Ruger in 7mm rem mag and made the mistake of trading it for another gun years ago and I do miss it.

BILLVO, The 7mm Remington Magnum is a very competent round for any situation. The accuracy potential is there. Just what package do you prefer to deliver it with? A pretty subjective answer that depends on what you like. I personally prefer Remington M-700's, you may like Rugers? They all need tuning for best performance. Savage has their new Accu-Stock! I havent tried that platform. If you shoot very little and carry it alot, I would go with light weight. I dont like wooden stocks on a serious hunting rifle. They expand and shrink to much in various weather conditions. Zeros are hard to maintain over even short exposure periods to moisture. Just some thoughts. GregH

I like to start these with define acurate. An off the rack m-16 is easily accurate to 500 meters if all you want to do is hit the bad guy every time. If you want to put it in his left pupil it is not accurate. Do you want to hit a deer in the heart lung area? hit a 10 ring or hit the 10x ring? any decent rifle with iron sights will let you do the first. add a decent scope and you should get the 10 ring most if not all the time. want the 10x now you need quality optics and rifle. I am partial to the 700's own 2 of em in a heavy barrell . 243 and . 308

Back in the day when I qualified I could put all 10 rounds (or was it 5) in the head of a siloutte at 500 meters with open sights. If the wind was gusting instead of steady I would just put em into the chest

I am mostly partial to the 700 Remingtons myself also. I like pinpoint accurate. I will probably be spending way more on the scope than the gun itself, I am going with a 50mm nightforce scope. And It will ot be a wood stock, I am partial to the synthetics for just that reason plus they stand up better to the beating they take over time.

The Nightforce is an excellent scope, but very heavy. What Power? An NXS? Are you considering a Remington M-700 Sendero with the heavy barrel? The H-S Precision stocks are good but they still need to be fitted to the receiver. Those 700's are not always perfectly round. GregH

I really like the M700 XHR rifles and they are not round anyhow. :-laf Yeah NXS.

The Sendaro is really awesome also.

I have been looking at info on the Sendero and it looks like it could be the better choice for my needs/wants. :D

Thanks for the heads up on that one Greg.

Remington 7MM "Ultra Mag" Sendaro has caught my eye too,dad has a Smith/Wesson 7MM for the past 25 years and after seeing him shoot everything with it that is my choice----just kind of like the Ultra for the flatter trajectory. DW

7 mm

As said before, defining "accurate" is where to start. I know you dont want to change calibers, but they are finding the short mags are naturally more accurate as the short fat case burns more of the powder faster. They also kick less which out of shape, fat guys like me appreciate! I have a rem model 7 ss in 7mm rem saum (they don't make anymore as the wsm took over the market) that consistently shoots 1/2 moa out of the box with factory loads! Again, that was just for info, I kow you don't want to change.

Before the savage's new trigger and stock took the market, I had always been told that the Rem 700 was the best out of the box. Christensen Arms uses the 700 action on their pricey customs. Here's the advice I was given from my father-in-laws' cousin who used to be a Camp Perry instructor and coach of the US Army shooting team. He said if youre not happy in any way to call the manufacturer and send it back. Then it's redone by a master gunsmith who really takes pride in his work and not an assembly line piece. Close to 20 years ago, I bought a Rem 700 in 30-06 that I fought to get to 2moa. I noticed the crown hadn't been completely refinished - you could still see the tool marks. I called and they said send it in, we'll fix it. When I got it back I didn't recognize the gun. They fixed the crown and reblued the whole rifle - the most beautiful deep blue I've ever seen. They also did a trigger job, lapped the bolt lugs and floated the barrel! It then shot 1/2 moa with factory loads and 1/4moa with hand loads! And it didn't cost me a dime.

Which ever way you go, HAVE FUN!

Dave
