Read this if you can

Sense my coyote encounter the other morning ive had an ich that had to be scratched. Went to the local Range if you can call it that with BIL. Set up some metal swingers at 3/5/6 hundred yards. Took my 7mm08 with a Nosler 140gr BTip on top of 42gr of Varget torched off by BR#2. Man was I humiliated. Did great from bench but off hand well lets say I REALLY NEED TO PRATICE.

"Practice makes perfect", goes the saying. I've shot NRA Palma, F-class, and across the course for years, and I still can't shoot as well as my old man. He can drop a hog running at 600 offhand every time!! And me? Well, I just "educate" 'em, as he calls it. :D I call it "fireforming!" LOL! For offhand shooting, I really like to practice with my 77/22 in 22LR. It makes for great form and patience, controlling heart rate, breathing, eye movement, trigger control, etc. And it's much cheaper in the long term!! I like to set up some gongs or metal plates (scrap iron) on strings or chains at 100yds and when they're blowing in the wind(light winds... I can't hit them if it's too windy!!), it makes you really focus on what you're doing!! Spinners make for great fun, too.

Most of the shots that we take hunting for Mule deer or Elk are at long range so we have the time to set up and make calculations and the game has no idea we are even there until they hit the deck. Taking advantage of my pack or some other kind of rest is general practice im not going to take an off hand shot at something 800 yards away and wound an animal to me thats not very ethical. BTJMO Ive seen hunters chase wounded Elk over two mountain passes and regret ever taking the shot in the first place. And then there's the thought of how in the Hell are we going to get this thing out of here. And my mule's and I just stand there and smile they get extra grain and we'll take it out but it's going to COST someone and my name is not someone. Your rite thou I do need to practice more off hand

AAHHHHHHHH, I remember! Used to call it "awfulhand" :-laf! Going to try to give my Son a lesson, tomorrow in the fine art of "awfulhand" shooting:D! Hopefully we can get some good trigger time together.

HHhuntitall, you are sure right about the . 22 as a training device. Cheap, no recoil and it really shows your follow through(or lack of) with its comparably long barrel time.

BIGNASTY, I used to know a fine shooter that kicked butt in 200 yard offhand hunter matches with a 7/08. One shot closest to center. Relay participants paid $1. 00/shot and the winner took home 90%, the club got 10%. It wasnt me:{!:-laf

When you are practicing off hand, find your bodys natural position, relative to the target. This centers your body to the target. Breathe-Breathe-Breathe-Breathe and hold 1/2 volume, inscribe an infinity symbol with the crosshair, relative and centered on the target. Timing and trigger control are the next on the list. Squeeze as the center approaches the intersection of the infinity symbol. The shot should break at the center.

The infinity symbol helps add symmetry to your natural body movements. It does take practice.

Just some ideas passed on to me. Hope you can use them. GregH

Taking an 800yd shot on elk and taking a 600yd shot on a hog is a complete different scenario!! Hogs are disastrous!! They're taking over this part of Texas, destroying crops, water lines, and fences in the process!! We've declared war on them and a hit is a hit, regardless of where we hit them. Brutal, yes, but hogs reproduce at an astronomical rate, and any kind of kill is neccessary to keep them somewhat in check. Elk are a different story. Their death is not a neccesity, so it should be kept as humane as possible... . JMO.

I have heard about the PIG take over in Texas. But in So Cal they were very good eating. I guess it goes back to you are what you eat. Calif. pigs were in the central valley ate barley (enough reason to shoot them to save the beer) and other grain crops. I dont think sage would be a good tasting feed

I planted 150ac of Milo/Maize Sorghum Grain and didn't start my combine, despite the record rainfall and 120lbs to the acre fertilizer. The hogs ate every bit of it, some of it off to the ground!! I was lucky to have insurance on the crop!! I killed almost 200 hogs in two months! They'll eat anything, including carrion(dead hogs!) and tree roots. They sniff out turkey and quail eggs, root up water lines, move water troughs, break fences, eat the cattle supplements, plow fields... . they're a menace!!

Sage makes a good seasoning, BTW... ...

Yep, A tractor mounted M-2 and an M-60:D would be appropriate farm implimentsOo.

I like "smoked" pork, my-own-self!!! with hot BBQ sauce!!! GregH

Ok here's what you do dig a 50 yard trench fill it with a 50/50 mix of JP4 and Isopropyl alcohol use a trip wire to detonate a claymore. If you should not have a claymore then use an impact detonator. If you dont have one of those use and ext. cord and some 220v that would be a VERY LONG EXT. CORD. We used this mix in V N and it was effective as hell. The smell was not to be believed :-laf

:-laf 50/50 Gasoline and kerosene... 'bout the same as Jet-B fuel ... . yeah, smells like my shop heater, I bet. What does the Isopropyl do? Catalyst? Or low temp ignition? All out of claymores, so I'll have to run me some cord, I guess. If I had a few hundred claymores, a tripwire would work great around my milo fields... . :D OH, wait, I already have several thousand acres of charred pasture land!! It can't smell much worse than that!!!:p

"awfulhand" :-laf I wonder... . if Texas passes this "Hog Killing" bill, will I be able to write off hog eradication equipment?!??! :D Hmmm, I'm dreaming of a Bell 222, retrofitted by Dillon, of course.....

HHhuntitall, In the words of my favorite comedians, "The 3 Stooges". Curley says' in his New York accent, "Hey Moe, That'll Woik! Nuk Nuk Nuk":-laf:-laf:-laf! GregH

7 mm/08 is a nice handgun cartridge; I have used it since the 1980s. Before Remington took it, it was the 7 mm/. 308; same cartridge but with the . 308 neck length.

The Isopropyl Made it like JELLO and it wouldn't soak into the ground. We found that it worked really well in fuel bladders or external wing tanks I think it was kind of a containment thing made it a little more explosive. When we lit that stuff off you could feel the heat from a 100 yards away

JELLO!?!? Oh, that has soooo many applications!! He he, :D Oh, I'm gonna have to check out that chemical composition!! I don't know where I can find Isopropyl by the drum, though..... Thanks for the mental image, anyway!!
