Cummins detunes ISB 5.9 RV

Piers new website

A friend of mine has a 8. 3 Cummins in his work truck. I don't know if it's a 12 valve or 24 valve.

What can you get out of these motors? Will the same things we do to our trucks work on the 8. 3? How much horsepower is possible?

oh yes, you can make way more hp with a 8. 3

piers explained to me on time that the 450 hp marine 8. 3 uses less fuel than a 370hp 5. 9.

I'm making 500hp with my 5. 9 on fuel alone. :)

The 8. 3L (12V) is capable of a lot of HP. Mid 500's is no problem at all. THe big advantage over the 5. 9, is the torque. It will be about 25-30% higher.

One of my future projects is to put an 8. 3L into a Ram, and make a sweet drag truck. :D

C8.3 drawbacks

I have pursued the project of building a C8. 3 for powering a little sled like a Dodge. The drawbacks did not seem so bad at first, but quickly became too much. They were:

1. The length of the block was way too much for any Dodge pickup platform. It would have meant busting through the firewall and building a little doghouse type thing.

2. The weight - 1500 lbs dry. This may not seem like much but the upgrades needed were demanding - this engine is 1/3 heavier than the B5. 9.

3. After speaking with lots of mechanics, the C8. 3 broke down more often and was a big pain in the rear to work on. They didn't give specifics, but all had much more difficulty than with the 5. 9. All disliked that motor.

Again, just a couple of cents worth, but I too think that a stock 500hp/1200lbft would be AWESOME.

The first time I talked to Mark Chappel about 3years ago, he told me he had a 550hp 8. 3 then. They are built a little better than a 5. 9 according to some mechanics I know. They were also designed for multifuel tractor engines at the same time as the B. Craig

Here's what I'm dreamin':

Take a beat up 2wd standard cab dually. Stuff in one twin-turbo, 8. 3L monster with an Alllison 5 speed auto. Lower that puppy and put on some of those Mickey Thompson fat-A$$ dually replacement tires on Weld wheels.

Go trollin for anything that has wheels on it.

Great fun!:D :D :D

1 or 2 dozen valves

I believe the 8. 3 is similar to the 5. 9. If it is mechanical (C8. 3) it has 12 valves, if it is electronic(ISC) it has 24.

It was surprising what I used to embarrass from stoplight to stoplight when I was bobtailing around in my 1979 White RoadBoss II with a 903 Cummins & six-speed Spicer transmission. It was darnright QUICK up to about 50 mph. 320 HP and 900 #/ft of torque in a 14,000 pound truck CAN move. :D
