You going to need a CDL to drive your PU?

No. The manufacturer's gross combined weight rating and trailer tow rating have no connection to the 26,000 lb. limit for combined weights in DOT regulations. DOT doesn't know or care what Ram says the new HO trucks can tow.

The manufacturer's limits are about engineering limits. DOT regulations are about actual weights or rated weights at the wheels. DOT will use scale weights and if the driver does not have a CDL they will add truck GVWR and trailer GVWR to determine what the truck and trailer combination could weigh.

I just priced a new one. They want over $7000 for the Diesel. Ouch. I'll be keeping my 05... . forever.

That's nothing new. The Cummins option has always been priced pretty close to that. The price has only increased a little over time with inflation and devaluation of the dollar.

What's the point of a 1/2 ton truck with 800 lb-ft and a 30k gross combined? Why not just get a 3/4 ton or 1 ton?

With all respect to the OP, this thread is in the wrong forum, and it would appear that the mods haven't moved it. We are talking about HD trucks here, not their 1/2 ton brethren.
