I cracked the head of my oem fuel filter canister so, instead of replacing with an original I opted for a new Racor for about the same price. Here are some specs:



OEM Filter / Racor 690RP122

Filtration: 10 microns / 2 microns

Flow: 24 gph / 90 gph

Pressure Drop: . 5 psi / . 29 psi



I got more flow, better filtration, and a filter that'll last longer and is easier to service. Plus I got rid of 4 banjo fittings and replace with -8 AN fittings. If my lift pump ever goes I'll go -8 AN all the way back to the tank.

will it fit a 2001?

Look this filter up at Diesel Injection out of Texas and it looks like it will be a direct replacement for the OEM filters. The only list that it works up to 1999 model year. Any idea if filter size/shape changed in 2000? Think this will fit 2001?

I mounted in the same location as the OEM. I just made a bracket out of 2x2 angle - cut one leg down to 1" so it wouldn't bump the injector lines and wouldn't stick out too far. I centered it under the dip stick so my pressure sender lines would straddle it and not chafe too bad.

This is not a direct replacement. It's just a generic spin-onfuel filter/water seperator from Racor. You could do this on any model -- just have to find a place to mount it.

Kyle – Couple of Questions

Nice Pictures! That Racor unit looks like the top of the one some of us have used for the Pusher Pump filter. What was the part number? I got my Racor filter from the same place, but I didn’t realize that you replaced the whole thing. Did you paint it? Does your filter have a water separator sensor on the bottom? And what do you use the shut-off valves going to the senders for?
 
The Racor part number is 690RP122

That's: "6"00 series, "90" gph "R"acor with water "P"robe, "12"-volt heater, and a "2"-micron rating.



It will work on either a suction or pressure system. The flow volume and filtration are determined by which element you put on it (30, 10, or 2 micron / 45 to 120 gph). The 120 gph is limited to 15psi in a pressure system but all the others are good to 30psi.

The bowl screws onto the botom of the filter. It contains a heating element (if you ordered that option) and a place for a water probe. Don't bother buying the Racor probe, The one in your oem filter will unscrew and screw right into the Racor bowl. Then you can use your oem plug. For the heater, I had to replace my plug with the one supplied by Racor.



Racor recommends 2-microns for the final or only filter. You could use a 10-micron as a pre-filter (either suction or pressure). If you did that your final filter would last a lot longer. If I were to put a filter before the pusher pump (suction) I'd get the 400 series -- same filter, same options, but with a priming pump on the head.

They come that color (biege) - they even sell touch-up paint for them if you're concerned about that.



Those are AutoMeter pressure senders and they're pricey. The needle valves are there to dampen the pounding they get from the lift pump. I just barely crack them and my gauge needle has a nice slow sweep. As you can see they're not on the engine and they're wrapped in high-density foam to limit vibration. I toasted my first 2 senders mounting them right on the filter head. I don't want to buy any more.



The extra valve on the top sender (post-filter) is for bleeding air when I change elements. You can't see it but I have a switch to manually cycle the lift pump so I don't have to pre-"spill" the element on a filter change.

I don't notice much of a difference now but I'm running at stock power level. I'm freeing up the fuel path to (hopefully) avoid problems when I do increased power. This mod will probably make more of a difference when I pump up the HP.



Currently, the lowest post-filter pressure I've seen is 6 and that was at red-line. I do recall seeing pressure as low as 4 (with the oem filter), so maybe it does make a difference even with stock HP.



I do notice that the pressure difference between pre/post filter is much less than it used to be. The specs say . 29 psi pressure drop but that's at 30psi and at 90gph. Right now the pressure drop is less than . 1 psi. It used to be . 4 difference with a clean oem filter.
