About to depart on a long trip and found some old diesel in a reserve can I carried with me last summer. Wondering if I should mix the 6 gallons with a full tank and maybe some power service fuel supplement and keep on truckin, or not take a chance and dispose of it?

It was carried in the back of my truck for a couple months in the hot sun and in a red contianer. Does sun affect diesel fuel?

What would you do?

I'd surely appreciate your experiences and/or advice.

I agree... Unless it got some water or other contaminates in it, I would just put it in with a full fuelup and not sweat it. :)

You should never store diesel in a container that's galvanized... something about one of the chemicals in diesel that will decay the galvanized material... (zinc) and leave it in the fuel... which is not good for the engine... ...

My 1967 Benz has the same fuel in it as when I parked it in 1988 and it still starts and runs ok. The car is sinking into the ground and won't move, but the engine starts and runs.

I have a neighbor that bought a 250 gal tank and 2 55 gal drums of diesel for his Y2K initiative.

He bought a Kubota diesel to do his yard in 2003 and has been running the Y2K diesel through the Kubota without any problems.

I was going to try and make a deal for his 5 year old diesel but he said he was going to use it up!

IT WORKED ! :)

Blended about 5 gals old fuel in with 10 gallons already in the tank and it ran fine. Have put 700 miles on since then with no ill effects.

Thanks to all for your help. It made a stressful decision just hours before a cross country trip a lot easier.

Have a Great Summer.

Joe
