Road trip vacation observations

For a few years after 9/11 you would see American flags on many if not most houses. On the day of 9/11, my flag was up less than 5 minutes after the 2nd plane hit (as an act of defiance) as everyone realized by that time that it was terrorism, not a horrible accident.

Well, as the years have gone by, most people no longer display the flag on 9/11. And that includes me. With the passage of time, and two mini wars in iraq and a micro war in afghanistan, 9/11 has become just another day for the most part. It was a horrible carnage. But the reality is those people were just victims. They were not courageous, they were not heroic. They were just snuffed out. (There were some stories of a few of the individuals acting heroically)

This morning I was reading the comics in the paper. There is a cartoon called the wizard of id. It showed the little king standing in front of a wreath in front of a fire truck. Behind the king were some firemen. I think I remember they were holding flowers. I just did not get the cartoon. It just wasnt funny. But then I realized the it was about the 343 New York firemen who, even as the twin towers burned and melted, even as it collapsed, continued to stream into the building. There were still people to be rescued. And it was up to the fireman at all costs to rescue them.

After realizing that, I went strait home and up went my flag.

Here is to you, the firemen of New York. In an age where a girl who joins the army and works in a warehouse is called a hero, those firemen are the true heros of our time.

Tractorat

Tractorat,

Forget, not me. The two Flags fly at home, two at my desk one from our Son's Yellow Ribbon Departure, and a R,W&B themed T Shirt. Is it enough, no not really but its a lot more than many.

I'll raise a glass to those who ran in later tonight.

Trat, you're an asshat. Hey that rhymes! LOL.

Your summary of what happened today 14 years ago really sucks and would get you knocked on your arse around here.

There were a lot more than FDNY going up the stairs when everyone else was going down.

You obviously have no idea what went on 9/12...9/13...9/14........... to today.

To discount this would be similar to discounting Pearl Harbor.

Wayne,
I didnt mean to offend anyone. Just an acknowledgement of what happens in history. As it gets further and further in the distance, it becomes less and less observed.

Yes, there were much more than just the firemen. And I know some folks personally who were there. All who carried on in the aftermath were quite heroic.

Also, in NY, it is quite different than at least out here on the west coast. My observation has nothing to do with those living in NY. You are arguing apples and oranges.

BTW, I am NOT discounting the attack on NY. That is the point I am making.

No I haven't forgotten. How can I? Every time I go to the airport I get reminded they won. Ineffective TSA making everyone, American Citizens, take their shoes off. Excuses to expand NSA's powers. Loss of the very Freedoms they were so jealous of. Invading the wrong or not enough countries responsible.

Most of all there were examples of the true word "Hero/Hero's" in United Airlines Flight 93 where the passengers proved Americans aren't Sheep to be slaughtered and saved the lives of people at the intended target even though it cost them their own lives. This wasn't sensational as the planes plowing into the building so the Media didn't cover it as much. I mention this as the emergency personnel in the same Hero class who also died that day are pretty well covered already.

The Anthrax scares (murders) after it are also worth mentioning.

I am glad that every other word isn't "Terrorism" on the news anymore.

I just hope we are better prepared and have figured out the communication issues experienced that day.

Yet another group of folks I should have mentioned and the reason my flag went up today.

Wayne,
I reread my original post and I can see where it would be very easy to misunderstand the point I was trying to make. Never the less, there is enough there you should have been able to figure it out. And you are way out of line.

BTW,it is interesting that you mention discounting Pearl Harbor. Do you do anything every Dec 7th to remember that attack ? If you do, you are one of the very few. And it should be recognized.

Wayne, I just reread YOUR post, and you are a moron. I didnt summarize what happened on 9/11 at all. Merely pointed out how it has become irrelevant in most of the country. And I was drawn to action by a cartoon that was praising a particular group of Americans who died trying to save lives when it was obvious they would probably die in the process.

Yes, our lives have become affected by the events of 9/11, but there is no "remembering" of what happened and why. And that is wrong.

I'm a paid call FF/AEMT. I don't feel that the 343 that died are anymore important than the other 2,000 + that died that day. We all put our pants on one leg at a time and our blood is no deeper red than others.

Every single person that died on 9-11 needs to be remembered and embraced. And before the tin-foil hat group turns the death of 2,000 + people into a circus, let me remind that almost 3,000 people died that day and hundreds of thousands of people that helped clean up that mess are suffering from Cancer and other illnesses that continue to kill.

I'll get off my soap box now, and I hope that each and everyone of you hug your loved ones close tonight and rest well.

The flight 93 crash site is not far from my home (nowhere near the scale of what happened in NY or DC, but the images of what we saw that day will last me a lifetime). I have taken my daughters there quite often. I know it is part of our local history so it will be easier for the kids to remember here, but I want to make the effort for them to be able to share that dark day in history with the future generations.

It's worth the trip if any of you are ever in western PA.

My company was activated and in route to Shanksville immediately following the crash. Though we were sent to a standby position on the initial response, we were gone for over a day. I will never forget coming home to my family knowing that the many of our brothers didn't have that chance. They say that there will be days in our lives that changes us forever. That was mine.

Tractorat, I will apologize for my opening before. In hindsight, it was rude and mean- but that's it. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and perhaps you went the long way to get your point, that's how it was received. This was too life changing for me to sweep under the rug. I've commented before here

Yes, I do give thought to the other life changing events our country has been through- regardless of what the media does. We're a very patriotic family in a libtard town. FWIW, my father in law sits on the board here and there were patriots in both sides of my family.

jgilliot, have you been to the new flight 93 memorial?

Wayne,
In further analysis Ive decided to give you a break. I think Ive realized that you think my comments on the relative apathy in a lot if not most of the country regarding 911 were aimed at you and/or anyone that lives or lived in NY. That could not be further from the case.

I could see myself going there someday soon to pay my respects.

Well worth the trip. And, when you do come out, plan on spending a couple of days right in this area. There are a lot of interesting things to see withing an hour or so that I'm sure your family would enjoy.

I met a family this summer that came in from Arizona to vacation here for a week. Living here all my life, I don't exactly view this as a tourist area. They came in to see the Flight 93 memorial and also visited Falling Water, Ohiopyle, Fort Necessity, etc.

Maybe next years summer trip? I'm still scouting locales but I think that's a bit far out.
