Has anyone given any thought to using the HX35-9cm2 turbo from the 2001 ETC Automatics? The smaller turbine housing would increase throttle response and torque over stock, especially with a custom-tuned pump. I know the operating band of the engine would probably be shifted from 1600-2500 RPMs to 1300-2000 RPMs, but when combined with a LARGE truck transmission (7,9,10,13-spd), you pull a house down. This is a step in the opposite direction from the high horsepower crowd (increasing RPM), but the available fueling at the lower RPM would be phenomenal. Is there a 9 cm2 turbine housing available at this time? Ted Jannetty, I'm sure you'd be a fan of this set up! #ad

<font color=blue>Yes it will be great throttle response but you will have to keep in mind the EGT temps! More then likely with what I want I have to change turbos due to the high EGT for the power level I seek. Your theory is ok but I don't think it will work for anyone doing mild to high BOMB'ing. I am approaching my EGT problems a couple of different ways and don't have anything to say about it yet, but I am afraid once I toss in the DD Stage III injectors its gonna be "begging" for a bigger turbo. Also another thing to think about on the 9cm² turbos they have that lovely "hardlined" wastegate! I am doing everything I can to lower my EGT so that I can keep the small turbo for the response because I also still have my stock converter, so I will have the best of both worlds! I'll know more on my EGT temps soon once my Pyscotty Air gets here, might be a good excuse to install an Air Bulldog Hood!

Hey Michael,

Haven't seen ya post in a long time! How are you getting along with the HX40, 5" exhaust, etc. these days? Have been intending to email you since I may go the same route on exhaust that you did. There is a truck shop with plenty of 5" stock for pretty cheap near here. Nice big chrome tips too #ad
. I think Evan Beck is planning to go with an HX40 & 5" also. I'm trying to remember--you have DDIIIs, VA & Blue Chip, right? What sort of MPG do you see when driving sanely and EGTs when gettin on it? I still have my stock system but straightpiped. Sounds great but want it a little quieter--I'm guessing your setup w/resonator isn't quite as loud.

KatDiesel-
My experience with high EGTs are a result of over fueling in RPMs above 2400 with the stock turbo. With the HX40 I have, I lack the low-end torque (1300-1800 RPM) that I liked with the stock turbo. Since I don't haul often and when I do it's light, then the HX40 is a great "performance" turbo. It gives great acceleration and lowers the EGT to safe levels. I think the HX35-9cm2 turbo would be great for those who haul heavy loads. The HX40 is not for the heavy hauler unless one wants to keep the RPMs high and can accept a lot of smoke... at least that's my experience. I understand that the small turbo can create high EGT, but that means that you'll have to drive at a lower RPM. I think a 9-spd would go great with the small turbo because of the tighter gear ratios and greater input torque rating. It's also understood that the horsepower would be smaller than with an HX40 due to the drop in usable RPM. However, pulling torque would be greatly improved.

Vaughn-
It's been a while since I've posted on the TDR. I've been overseas for a few months for my work. I haven't been keeping up. My truck is running beautifully... she smokes like a charm #ad
Lots-a-power. How's everything with your new truck?

Michael, I'm liking the new truck very much, thank you! Have 13,400+ miles already.

When I drove HVAC's truck I though the response & power was excellent at low RPMs--I tried lugging it a little & thought it did very well. But he's got done an RV ECM rewrite which he thinks has a lot to do with the good response. I am also comparing to my stock ETH which is a dog compared to yours' and HVAC's rigs #ad
. His made very little smoke at low RPM unless you tromped it off boost.

I appreciate your comments on the HX40 since I want to know the good & the bad before I consider going with one. It'll be awhile so lots of time to make up my mind.

Good to have you back in the country & back on TDR--even though we're posting here on the Undervalved Forum #ad

I make 30psi @ 1800..... not enough low end??HAH!! That's alot more than a stock small turbo.
I think last i noticed it was like 24psi@1600 also.
HX40 works great for me!
