1st gen starter on 2nd gen?

For those looking for a 4bt

Hello Diesel fans,

I am getting geared up to install a 6BT in my service truck & have a couple of questions on this repower. I bought a 90 dodge ram 2500 4x4 with auto. trany. I purchased a nv4500 out of 99 dodge 4x4 but am using the np205 out of the 90 with auto trany & found it has 23 spline input shaft. Is there an adapter sleeve to adapt from 29 spline on output of nv4500 to a np 23 spline input? or can I use my current np205 in my chevy? I havent downed the truck yet so I don't know what spline set up it has. Does anyone know what the 77 stock Chevy 205 spline count was? I am planning on using chevy 4 row radiator & need to change the water outlet on the 6bt to route the hose to the drivers side, did cummins make a different water outlet? I would like to stick with the dodge alt. Is ther an add on tach out there that would run off of this alt. The dodge I bought was wrecked so I need a new 7 blade fan, any one have one to sell? I have read about dodge having problems with their lift pumps, is this a problem on the 90 year modle? I am planning on using my galvanize fuel tank already on board, is this ok with the diesel?

Thanks to those who reply. wmar

The GM 4 core radiator is going to be overtasked with the 5. 9 hooked to it, The flowrate of the 5. 9 water pump and the vibration can tear the GM radiators to pieces in a short time. Especially the old copper ones.

The best radiator you can use for this is a 2nd generation dodge cummins radiator, It is an easy mount due to the Dodge radiator being a self supporting unit with the round rubber feet on the base of each tank. The best part is when you are ready to innercool the engine to turn the pump up more, you can get a Factory Dodge 2nd generation innercooler and it will fit right up with minor cutting on the core support to accept it. Kenny at Autoworld 406 727 8915 has a pretty good sourcing on the cummins fans, and any other front accesory parts you'll need to bring the engine back to working order. They're the ones doing the repower on the F-550 on the board now.

Can't remember off hand which output/input is which. I will look in my notes when I get a chance if no one else pipes in on that.

Fuel tank is no issue. Steam it out and hook up the lines. Lift pumps are not an issue on the 12 valve engines, it's mainly the vp-44 equipped 24 valve boat anchors that were falling on their knees due to the lift pumps. The long life reliable lift pumps mounted on the block were too reliable for Chrysler to continue with them I guess  Emissions bureacracy was the biggest part to blame, but not all.

Autometer as well as Isspro make Tach's that will work off the harmonic balancer with their own magnetic pickup supplied in the install kit. Since you're not using an auto, you may be able to use the factory mounted harmonic sensor that Chrysler used for Cruise and ECM inputs for the auto's.

Good luck with it. Its late, that's all I have to offer tonight.

Wow, lots of good info. Thanks for your time. I'll call Kenny at auto world. Do you know if the dodge radiator you recommended has the upper hose on the passenger side?
