GM transmission Adapter?

I'm looking to put the big C in a Ford excursion and my question is about motors. I'm looking at a 1990 12er to possibly use for this project, any thoughts good or bad about using a 1st gen.

Should I be looking for a 2nd gen? I know this one dosen't have an intercooler but that shouldn't be too hard to plumb one in.

Any advice you guys have that have made conversions would be greatly appreciated

I never had believed that I needed a p-pump to make desirable power. The ve will do everything you need it to within reason. 500hp is not hard to do anymore.

On the 90, it has no innercooler, this you know. The injector bore is larger in these engines, and the heads are prone to cracking, however I know of a few trucks and have heard of many tractors that are running cracked heads, bombed/stock with no problems.

If you are getting the 90 cheep, then go for it. What trans are you going to use beind it? Going to find a 47rh with lockup/od?

Michael

My 1991 d-350 service truck weighed over 9,000 lbs loaded with its service bed and tools. I pulled a trailer with it several times a week, it never complained and had plenty of power.

I did install an innercooler from a '93 along with injector timing, and fuel adjustment. It was not enough to make it a hot rod or anything. I sold it with over 280,000 miles on the odometer and it is still going today with similar duties and weights.

The rotary pumps are much cheaper to rebuild than the P pumps, but not many people consider that. I like them personally, very reliable if you don't crank them way up.

Your excursion should be a nice rig with the 5. 9. It is my ideal family car idea. I'm looking for a v-10 excursion to repower, but it will be a while before I have the time to do it. The v-10's are getting put on the back of the dealer lots down here, most are growing cobwebs and looking really promising as a repower project. ($10,000 or less is what I'm looking for)

Only thing to consider is emmissions, if you are subject to inspections or any of the other regs, you may have a problem using an older engine in a newer vehicle. Most engine conversions that are compliant with the regulations have to use the same year or newer engine. Tailpipe tests are coming for the entire US, just a question of when

I'd rather see a vehicle with a bad engine put back into service than be junked as it is just as viable an arguement to keep the car MAINTAINED (not just driving it down the road blowing oil/antifreeze clouds behind it), and save it from the scrap pile. Which is only contributing to the waste disposal issues in this country. It seems just as green compared to the industrial waste that is part of every new car built to replace it.

Yes, its pretty cheap like around 1800. 00 but its only 2wd. My thoughts on a transmission are to buy a new ATS and stick in er. Any thoughts on this? I just don't know a whole lot in the differences between 1st gen motors and 2nd gen 12v.

Ive talked to other people and they said to wait and find a p pumped 12v. How much work can you do to a ve pump?

thanks for all the input

Is the exursion 4X4? If so then you might be wise in finding a 4X4 second gen. Then again, I bet you could find a 47rh and 241 t case in the classifieds to go with the first gen motor.

I really don't think there is any difference in the reliability of the ve or p pumps unless you are talking 400+ horses. I have 220,000 miles on my ve, and at 140,000 I had $400 put in to it from broken springs. My brother has spent many more dollars then this on his p-pump and my 93 runs better. What are you looking for in power. 300 hp is pretty easy, so is 400, then after that it gets a little hairy. FWIW though, my wife will not drive my 230 hp/586 tq truck in the rain, because it gets squirrley when the turbo comes in. 250hp/600 ft lbs would very easily power the excursion down the road, better then the p-joke or v10 that comes factory. 250/600 can be had with a set of injectors, and some pump tweaks. Some grinding, and more adjusting and the ve really comes alive.

Look at the Georend Brothers webcite too for transmissions.

Michael

Check out ford-cummins.com they sell adapters so you can use the factory ford transmission. The 4r100 can handle quit a bit of hp with a new converter. I would go with a P-pump, there out there reasonable.

I always wanted to see Dodge build this vehicle on the pickup chassis. In the Excursion it should make one hell of a tow rig!

Also go to the fordcummins site they have an excursion there for sale on the vehicles page 24V with a p-pump it already done, a couple decent pics to look at

I see, I went & now its gone! This was a week & 1/2 ago. Any way it WAS cool! It was a 4wd Excursion, 2000 I think but it had a 2001 24 valve that had P-pump conversion!!! With a NV4500!!! I would have been perfect for me. I believe it was $24000 asking price.
