Need a motor????

WW II Ford Snowblower Cummins or not?

I have a 90 Ford F-250 5. 8l w/ 5sp and I am going to convert it with a 97 12v and Dodge 5sp and Transfer case. Anyone do something similiar? Any suggestions would be great, I have already talked with Fordcummins.com guys. How about hooking up clutch linkage, speedo, 4x4 lights, etc. to the Dodge drivetrain? I know it can be/has been done, just some pointers would be great.

Thanks

This forum, as well as this one http://www.cummins-conversion.com/phpBB/index.php will help you out tremendously. I cant help you out on the speedo, but the 4x4 lights should just be a matter of splicing the Ford plug into the Dodge setup on the Tcase. A little trial and error is all that would take. As for the clutch, They should both be hydraulic, Im not sure about the older trucks, but the newer SDs use the same size line going to the slave cylinder as the Dodge trucks. So its just a matter of knockin the roll pin out of the slave, pulling the line out, and putting it into the Dodge slave. Let us know how you are coming along with the project.

UPDATE: Have the donor

Well a little progress, I have the donor in the garage today and will start pulling parts this week. Getting excited Oo. Unfortunatly I have to wait until the first of the year to pull the Ford apart, as I have family visiting for the holiday and need the extra vehicle. Gives me time to clean up the transmission and engine and gather other parts. Here are a couple pics

KDP Neutralized

Pulled the front cover off and found the KDP out about 1/8", Fabed up my own tab and got that fixed, also adjusted valves and new valve cover gaskets. Pulling the motor off the frame tomorrow and will drop the pan and check things out.

Not hard, just time consuming. Most of the repower in the ford's is just finding a place for things, there's plenty of room in your body style truck. Any suggestions would be great, I have already talked with Fordcummins.com guys. Best advice I can offer on this?... Don't call them again. Unless you want to be taken for a ride and outright lied to. I have had several friends and customers rant about the worthless crook. None have returned a positve response to his supposed "workmanship". How about hooking up clutch linkage, speedo, 4x4 lights, etc. to the Dodge drivetrain? Clutch linkage is easy, as mentioned above. You can use the Ford slave assembly, but you'll need to change the push rod if I remember right. The Dodge slave is a better way to go though. I know it can be/has been done, just some pointers would be great.

I forget off hand which is which, but the ford and the Dodge transfercase 4wd senders are opposite, one closes an insulated circuit and one completes a ground if I remember right. It has been 3 years since I have done a ford. The only thing you need to do is find a similar dimensioned detent sensor that fits the ford circuit and will thread into the Dodge transfer case. The depth of the plunger was a problem if I remember.

If you need specifics on this, call my old friend Kenny Kraus at Autoworld in Montana, Great Falls to be exact. His # is 406 727 8915. He has completed more cummins repowers than probably all of this board combined. He built his first Chevy Cummins repower BEFORE dodge released their first generations onto the market. He is the one that fordcummins was/is trying to impersonate and take credit for with his "montanan" nickname. This is one of the other big reasons I absolutely despise them. Kenny just smiles and won't acknowledge the worthless liars existance, which I think is alot better than I would handle it. You get that alot up our way.

By the way, Tell Kenny to get a website that is current, he needs the encouragement. I think he is missing alot of customers without it, one of the reasons I refer him work so much. He is a great guy and will set you straight with anything you needs for the repower. Just remember, he does this for a living, so don't talk his ear off too long. Buying some parts from him would be an incentive to get more tips from him too, hint hint. ;)

Thanks for the pointers. I actually ordered my conversion kit from FordCummins before you made your post. I think your comments about them are a little harsh to say the least! I have made several phone calls with questions and they have been nothing but great help. I am sure your friends at Autoworld do great work, I have seen the photos on the website and they look great. I actualy even sent them a couple e-mails with questions. But since I am 3000 miles away a install brochure and a few custom parts, and help over the phone will be a lot easier to deal with than trying to fab my own motor mounts, tach sensor mount, etc. I now have all the parts I need, so this will be basically a bolt in deal except for the small details like speedo and t-case lights like I had mentioned.

BTW I am a Montana Native, born, raised, and educated. We can all be friends no need for badmouthing, everyone has thier nitche market ;)

If you don't know the whole story, you wouldn't understand, trying to take someone else's reputation and assume it as your own and then profit from it is enough for me feel "harshly" about them. I have made several phone calls with questions and they have been nothing but great help. I am sure your friends at Autoworld do great work, I have seen the photos on the website and they look great. Kenny spends countless hours on the phone answering questions about repowers, more than half the time, he never sees a dime out of it.

Glad you appreciate the tips, hope they help. If I was out to profit from this, maybe then you could call me out on "badmouthing" someone. This serves me in no way. The "Flaming" I have received over this in emails only strengthens my opinion on it. Let's just drop it. I have better things to do than worry about it.

Update on Progress

Well a little update: I replaced all the seals on the T-case and checked it out, it is in good shape ready to go. The transmission NV4500 needed the updated 5th gear nut so that is finished along with a new rear seal.

I have found a used diesel core support for my truck, last one in the state I think, had to get it from Fairbanks.

Bought a new 31" diesel radiator for my year of truck.

Found a intercooler off e-bay from a Superduty.

I have the Ford diesel motor mounts plates and motor mount themselves.

I am going to get the new waternecks installed on the motor this weekend and a few other little things.

I think I have just about all the parts I need, the major ones at least.

I will post some pics of the tear down and install when it happens after the first of the year.

Have a Merry Christmas :D :D
