I have a 3rd gen now, but i had a 91 1st gen 12 valve truck that i sold to a friend a few years ago. it has around 180K on it. He said it needs timing gears, truck broke down and he towed it to his yard 2-3 years ago (never fixed it). I'm thinking of buying it back and have read a little about the KDP problem, which it sounds like this is what happend. MY QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS IS, what is the worst case senerio? how much damage can i get cought up in here? and what would you offer for a truck not running like this? thanks.

Well a lot of things factor in to the value, I know around my area a 91 is pretty rusty, as far as the KDP, you really have to get that cover off and look at what your dealing with, It could have caused verry little damage or a lot depending on the cycle, RPM, and load that was on the engine at the time. Is it intercolled or not? that also plays into value. For a typical IC non-running in my area is 1500 or less

I hear it has done little more damage than cracking the aluminum case or as much as breaking the cam and eating valves etc. along with breaking the block.

Worst case scenario, new cam, pump, and crank gears, new timing case and cover. Perfect opportunity to put a PDR cam in there. Removing the front cover is a 20min job. If you can get it for $500, it's worth a look.

I had one that was on the other end of the spectrum- KDP fell out, and washed into the oil pan and ddnt hit anything. My W350 had a small dent in the cover. I beat it back flat, and put it back on. I need a new seal and gasket now (still leaks a little, but not too bad).
