I just found a 91 250 with a Cummins 5 spd, new clutch, trany, bakes, paint and tires, proably has 150,000 miles on it guys asking 7,000. woundering if thats a fair price? Does it still have any usable life left? Any of you out there with a truck like this? pros cons, performace, reliablity? thanks for any info you can provide, I'm use to the new, but I LOVE the look of an old Dodge heavy duty truck, just has a MEAN look to it.

Red_Rattler, sounds like you might have a great deal on your hands, here is what I know.

I have two 1992's, and love them to death.

The club cab was a garage kept baby before I got a hold of it (don't worry I still take care of it. ) It has 154,000mi on it with original everything except brakes, and axle seals. Serious... it was a rare find even the paint is still good. Note: this truck never towed or hauled anything before I got it, the tailgate was stolen just after it was bought new #ad
Paid:13,000

The second truck is more the average, it is a 1-ton dump 4X4 that came with a plow. I. E. abuse was on it's plate from day 1. I have replaced 4X4 steering u-joints, driveshaft slip joint, tie-rod end parts, rear brakes, and other normal wear parts for a truck with a hard 135,000mi on it. This truck needs work, but I can safely say that it is the most reliable vehicle I have owned. Paid: 10,000

Sorry, this is long, I live in a 1st gen household #ad

My dad just bought a 91. 5 w-250 like the one you are talking about with only 50,000mi on it #ad
The thing is like new mechanically, exterior has some scratches but it is straight none the less. Paid: 9,000

I love 1st gen's, and think that they are the last heavy duty truck Dodge made with a real diesel (clarification: straight axles, leaf springs, diesel engine turbocharged-intercooled with relatively few electronics) These trucks are reliable, easy to work on (for the most part), and are as you say appealing to te eye. With 150,000mi, decent maintenance, and low abuse you should see another 150,000mi with just normal repair.
Good Luck, Sorry to those who I just bored #ad

Is it a W-250 4X4 or a D-250? If it's a W-250, it sounds like a good deal. I recently sold a 91 W-250 with only 19K original miles, 5-speed, A/C, Dump bed, camper shell for 10,000. I currently own a 89 D-250 with 216K mi, and it still has plenty of life left in it. The Cummins engine will outlive the rest of the truck by a long shot.

I paid $5600 for mine - Canadian Dollars - it was a steal! I've had to fix a few things (hence the bargain price). I originally bought it to fix up and sell to make some $$$ but have since decided that I can't afford to replace it with something similar for the $11,000 I'd get for it.

Next is paint and etting rid of the moose pusher. (see pic)

I have a 91. 5 (intercooler) 4X4 W250 with only 116K on it. 95% highway miles, only pulled a horse trailer with it. Figure I can go another 10 years and 230 K total at least. I like the truck because it has not given me much trouble at all. Still original brakes. Was thinking about getting one of the new body designs until the early morning I ran into the trailer ramp. I thought I was going to die when I saw it. But the solid axle just scooted it ahead of me. Only bent the tie rod a little which was replaced. Would have probably wiped out one of the new front ends. I read some where in the TDR or here that the engine is a medium duty good for at least 250K but if you search for postings under "rebuild" there are a lot of 1/2 million + miles before rebuilt. Only complaint is it rides like a lumber wagon, rough on those 7 hour trips. Do have the paint starting to peel but I guess I can't complain after 10 years. As far as price I don't know, look up the kelly blue book on the internet.

You can't beat the reliability of these old trucks. I have heard of complete electical failures and the sucker just keeps going. You can't say that about the newer engines! #ad
I think you would have yourself a steal there. Even if you don't do a thing to it, you can call it "Old Reliable". The Cummins 6BT is built like a brick wall designed to last for years. If you decide to buy it and keep it you'll be probably passin it on as a family heirloom and it will still be running. I can't say that about the new diesels with direct injection computer control systems. These baby's were built simple and reliable... enough said! #ad

All the best!

Life of the truck is really not the question, its whether the newer, shiner paint prys your wallet open. LOL...
If you can replace the wear-out items on a used vehicle its worth it, but that one has all that done by the description.
Unfortunately I think this thing is only worth about $6000 Cdn in its current state (maybe I'm dreamin, its worth about $10,000 to me) I paid $15,000 5 years ago with 150,000 Km (93,750 Mi) on the dial.
That sounds like a fair deal for the truck you describe. Good Luck, and you can always get the help you need here.
