I am assuming it is a bad synchro. What would it run to fix? Am I correct that you'd have to pull the transmission or can you access anything from the top cover? All other gears are fine and shift good.

I think synchro too. The synchro is clutch so you might get a little improvement with an oil change for now. I've never had a get rag trans rebuilt I went with the NV4500. I say that about an oil change cause I have a friend that shifted his without the clutch for so long the synchro's froze up. After an oil change and started clutching properly they came back to life and worked fine.
I am looking forward to what others have to say about your problem. from what I understand the synchro gets the selected gear up to speed before you engage it. I could be way off, and its probably the safer bet to say I am wrong.

mine started doing the same right after i got it. actually. it started immediatly after i changed the trans oil. i dont know it the fresh thinner oil cause the problem or what, cause i got over 270,000 all origional. third grinds, but it i ease it in, it just clunks, fourth is getting to be a little clunky too, fifth has only occasionally givin be a little trouble. i think its the syncros. when i first got the truck, it poped into gear amazingly smooth.

cro-magnum, you are partly right. The synchro actually slows the gear down that you are trying to mesh the synchro assembly with, allowing stuff to go together smoothly.

Unfortunately, you have to remove the transmission to get to the synchro assemblies. What part of Southern IN are you in? I'm 1/2 hour from Lexington right now- could take a gander at it some weekend if you cant get it figured out.
