I frequently pull an 8,000 lb. 5th wheel, usually to Sierras or coast range - and changed front pads at about 50,000 miles. They still had at least 30% wear left, but changed anyway, since a long cross country trip was planned. NOW, at a bit over 100,000 miles front pads are still at about 50%, and I am wondering about the rear shoes - what seems to be "average" life outta those rear shoes? No squeaks, squeals or funny noise so far, and REALLY hate to demount those rear drums until I really HAVE to!

WELL - since THAT didn't work, let's try ANOTHER angle...

How many miles have you guys managed before needing new rear brake shoes?

OR, do they NEVER wear out, so no one really knows? #ad

Yeah, I know mileage varies with use, just looking for an average...

Gary,

I have a 1990 D350. I have about 100K on mine and still have half the lining left. I haven't had any problem with mine. When I did change them, I went to the local brake shop and had my shoes relined for $5 a side. Really cheap if you ask me. The expensive part is the seal/ Good luck.

I've had to change them far before they burn out, because of axle seal leaks. So far on the last set I've got about 35,000 Miles with no real wear. The front pads have only been changed once in 125,000 miles.

I had to change my rear shoes out at80K because of axle seal leaks contaminating the shoes. I just had my rear shoes replaced again this summer @ 220K, the fellas at the shop told me there was still some lining left! I don't tow frequently, but haul a lance camper around during the fall.
