Gentleman, I cannot move the shift lever on Park on my 06 CTD automatic trans. I just replaced the front end steering components and the power steering box. I had the truck on blocks in low range and finished the project and jumped in the truck to move it off the blocks and the shift lever is stuck in Park. I removed the covers under the dash and removed the shifter mechanism to see what's up. I know you have to push the brake to release something but cannot see any movement...

Thanks, Pete

Ck fuses and the brake switch. If you need to bypass it disconnect the wire that goes to the solenoid at the cable

Thanks Bob, I will look at that in a minute... I cannot think at the moment, I am racing around... unorganized trying to think of how to remedy the problem. If I disconnect the shift lever at the trans, I can obviously move the shift lever and then hook it back up, I can shift the truck... . I thought I had the problem fixed. BUT then I tryed to start it again and the whole story starts over... Thanks, Pete

I disconnected the snap in connector at the brake pedal and I can now move the shift lever. All fuses ck good. So what does this mean??

Thanks again, Pete

Another thought, While I was installing my steering components, I installed a plug in play electric trailer brake controller... I wonder if that could be the problem... I will investigate...

As everyone who owns/drives an automatic transmission equipped truck, you must press the brake pedal down to release the Park position lock on the tranmission shifter. When the brake pedal is pressed 12vdc is supplied to a small solenoid on the steering column above the brake pedal. Power to the solenoid retracts a pin which blocks the shift lever and locks it in Park position. I think power for the solenoid comes from the brakelight switch actuated by the brake pedal. You probably blew a fuse or wiped out the brakelight switch. Until you find and correct the problem you can simply physically remove the Park position solenoid from the steering column. Leave it wired but simply unbolt it from it's mount and secure it with a zip tie.

I removed mine when my truck was brand new because I don't like the federal DOT requiring me to press the brake pedal before I can pull my shift lever out of Park.

Thanks for the info, I will remove the solenoid from the column, good idea. I have even called the manufacturer of the brake control unit and they are stomped (Hopkins). I will continue to trouble shoot the problem...
