On the Road. stranded at Truck Stop

Fueled up @ the Flying J, RV pump. Got in, turned on the key. Dash lights and bell came on. As soon as I turned the key all power was lost.

A couple minutes later I had my head under the hood and the dash lights came on again. Tuned the key and all went dead. I switched a couple of the circuit breakers around to no avail. The power didn't come a third time.

Cleaned all battery terminals.

Have not had previous electrical trouble.

Have a cell phone with me, 928-580-5925.

I' ll get off this truck stop surfer for now and check back in a little bit.

THANKS

Just a quick thought... .

Got good clean battery post connections?

Do headlights work?

Maybe someone will come in with some *real*

help. :)

Sounds like a bad ground? I would personally suggest checking your ground connections where they ground from the battery to the frame or block. Otherwise I would consider the possibility of the ignition switch itself being bad. But I would Just about bank on a lose or bad ground by the sounds of it. Good luck

I'd see if someone has a set of jumper cables (buy a set from the truckstop?) and try jumping the batterys. Could have a short in one and the other is dead.

Good luck, RJR

THANKS for the input of solutions.

The electrical system decided to work. Have no idea why the truck started. I'm sure I'll have a repeat of this grimlen but for now I am back on the road.

my 94' had a wire in the steering column that would lose contact when I tilted the steering wheel down. I went to earheart dodge in Gilbert, Az. They soldered the wire togeather an its has been find for three years. My truck would run if I kept the steering wheel all the way up. Hope this help. Good luck

I know there is a starter contact mod out there - could your starter contacts be bad? Try a search for starter contact upgrade.

I don't think the starter contact would affect the dash lights. I'm thinking fuse, fusable link or connection at a battery.

MSwanson,

Your signature id say's ReBuilt? The motor? Looks like the starter contact item may not pan out for the total electrical issues. The fuseable link or bad electrical connection somewhere close to the battery is more suspect it appears.

Fuel line... . my '01 had a lift pump failure at 16k, but nothing electrical went out with it. I also had the Cam Position Sensor fail at about 36k, but it just made the gauges act weird and about 1/2 the horsepower than when it was working.

I'll be following this to see what gives! Chin up :)

The truck was a total. Didn't have to do anything to the engin or trany except straighten it from a 33 degree angle from center. Click on my profile and look at the truck.

Replaced a lift pump at 36K and will replace another LP in the morning, at 44K miles.
