I am wandering over here in uncharted territory for me and wondered if I could get some advice. A fellow city worker (i mean city EMPLOYEE, there is no such thing as a city worker) has a 92 350 4X4 dually, and he said last weekend he could not get it over 75 mph on the freeway, empty. He has an auto trans, which he says has slipped lately going into OD. He also says he pulls a 4000# camper, but is planning to upgrade to a 31 ft tag at about 8-9000#, and is worried about power. He said he is looking into Banks kit. I told him he should worry about the trans if he is going to bomb, as he says it already slips. Any info on mods to the mighty cummins, the trans ect would be appreciated. I tried to get him to join TDR, but he does not have a computer (poor guy). Thanks for the advice in advance.

Hi lawdog,

FWIW, the 92 does not have a lockup converter. If its slipping now it'll slip like the dickens when he up-rates the power curve. In my opinion your friend would do well to consider equivalent upgrade parts instead of Banks. There is no doubt that Banks make top quality equip. but your friend can do the same job for much less. A larger cap. airfilter, mandrel bent exhaust to make use of higher air intake volume, pump timing/tuning, injectors, will all make his rig haul apples.

The transmission is another question. His (I think) is like mine, the A518 4spd. Its actually not a bad trans. If its slipping now (how many miles on it?) it will definitely let him down with more payload and more power. Bill Kondolay is the man to see. I just had mine 'serviced' by his shop. First Class!!

I'm afraid he'll likely say ... ' get a new Chrys. trans. and let him upgrade TC,VB, and seals'

Bill will take calls personally, guide your friend to an "approved" shop, and follow-up till you drop!

Sorry if I've rambled a bit but to sum up, the upgrades for power are all avail. at really good prices if you shop. If you look at my signature, the only thing I'd do differently is a 14cm wastegated housing instead of the 16cm.

I'll watch for any follow-up.

Jump in guys!!

The 1st gen's have non locking torque converters so they're always slipping to some degree.

DTT have T/C and valve bodies for this transmission.

The stock exhaust is crushed where it goes over the rear axle and just mangled a bit near the transfer case.

A 3 1/2 or 4" exhaust will do the trick

Some of the early 92's have 21 cm exhaust turbine housing.

A 12,14, or 16 cm exhaust turbine housing !

And of course BIGGER INJECTORS!

Sounds just like whats going on with the 2nd GEN SET!

GeneH,

Your right on. The stock exhaust is pitifully restricted. Lawdog, changing to 3 1/2" mandrel bent is (as I read in here) good enough unless your going into much higher HP application. So the breathing in (air filter, TurboHousing) and the breathing out (exhaust) is a place to start. The next would be the "free" power tweeks via the pump adjustments. Keep in mind the VE44 is not the strongest pump and can only take so much pushing, but it can be teased for some nice results. Timing of the pump is certainly a must (did I mention that an EGT GAUGE IS A MUST!!! Repeat, A MUST!

The change over from a 21 or 18cm housing to a 16 or 14cm will help with smoke, and exhaust temps, faster spool-up and improved boost PSI's. I am using a set of BD 180 HP marine application injectors and they really did make a difference, which by the way, takes the load off the VE44 pump which is a good thing. In the end, all this is a moot point if the power can't get to the ground. A TC,VB transmission combo is the only way to reliably hang onto the power and apply it with any measure of durability. If I remember right, Bill K. told me that our converters run around 70 or 73% efficiency. His start at 89% go to 91% then 93% depending on power and application.

Sorry for being a little long on sentences.

Thanks for the info, I will pass it along to him. I believe he said his truck has around 87000 miles, so a trans fix is a must. Of course once he starts to feel some power, he will probobly be addicted and want more like the rest of us do. Thanks again.

the a518 trans has two adj. for the bands, get it serviced and also have the throttle cable and linkages adjusted. check the oil level while in

nuetral, warmed up and running. it'll work wonders

keep on ramming, real trucks have 1/4 windows

p. s. only use

CHRYSLER TYPE 7127 TRANS FLUID!!!!!!!!
