I am over in the third gen group mostly but I need some info to look at my neighbors '92.
His ABS light is on along with the dash brake light. He had the rear brakes redone last year with new wheel cylinders. The master is full. He also told me that his left rear brake got hot a few days AFTER the ABS light came on. We jacked up the left rear and it spins free before and after the brake has been applied.
Does it have a sensor on the rear dif that goes bad? Is there any ABS valving on the frame rail to check?
ANY help appreciated! Thanks, Chris

ABS

sensor on the diff and\or connections at the diff and on the frame rail above the left rear wheel. I have had both become an issue.

You can pull the codes by grounding the ABS controller behind the glove box. You will find a connector in the harness that can be grounded to activate the self test and flash the lights for codes.

Is there somewhere that I can find the flash codes? Is there a reset for the unit? I found today that the master cylinder was bad on the rear brake circuit. We replaced the master and bled out the system but the light didn't go out. I did a road test and the rears do lock up but will not pulse or what ever the control valve does to help the rears from skidding.
An ABS sensor is about $55. 00 and I don't want to replace it if it isn't bad. I HAVE replaced a few of them on Fords. Let me know if you guys have the abs flash codes.

Thanks for the info guys.

Thanks again for the help you guys!
I also looked online about the system and found out it is a Kelsey-Hayes ABS set-up.
Since we replaced the master due to little to no pressure at the rear brakes, I might have set a code in the unit. The site I looked on said to pull the ABS fuse or disconnect the battery for a few seconds and it would clear. I will try that tomorrow and post my results. Thanks, Chris

In the ABS unit on the rear frame the valve to the accumulator goes bad giving a soft pedal feel. Pumping it up only helps a little. When you push the pedal, all the fluid goes to the accumulator instead of the wheel cylinders. A lot of us remove the unit and unplug the control box.

Brakes feels better than on a new truck! ;)

I found the Kelsey Hayes ABS box behind the glove box. I turned the key on and quickly grounded the test port plug. I get 2 flashes, a pause then 4 flashes. After that it repeats 4 flashes. I read on the online info I pulled up and it said to count any long flashes along with the short flashes. Do you only get ONE series of flashes to count or does the repeating flashes continue to tell you what is wrong? With 6 flashes, 2 long and 4 short, it means the speed sensor on the rear diff is bad.
I forgot what 4 meant. Any ideas???

When the ABS computer starts to display the codes the first light flash is a long one, followed by shorter flashes. The long flash signifys the start of the fault code. Count all of the flashes to determine the fault code. The ABS computer can only store 1 code at a time, so if there are multiple problems you have to fix them in the order displayed.
