Is it Possible?

Ok, so my new crazy idea is to take my good engine and stick it into a Chevy Blazer. The one I've got my eye on is a 1990 (I think), is a 2-door, 4x4, auto, yada, yada, yada... I don't know yet what transmission is in this rig, but I imagine it would bolt up to the mighty Cummins with little problem?? Also, what about motor mounts?



I'm gonna be a regular in this forum if I decide to go through with this project, so I hope it's as friendly here as it is up in the "Nut House" (1st Gen. forum :-laf ;) :p )

A 1990 blazer most likely has a 700r4 transmission in it. It was the standard Auto for several years in the 1/2 tons. My 1990 suburban is/was equipped the same. (It's now sitting on a dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear axle) The next replacement in its future is the engine, but I'm going for a 4bt and a nv-4500/ dodge 205 transfer case.

The 1/2 ton springs in the blazer will squat about 2 1/2" from the weight of a 6bt, keep that in mind. I know, I've done one before. The frames aren't very strong in them either, make sure you reinforce the steering box and replace the rivets in the frams crossmembers with grade 8 bolts, the torque will loosen the rivets in a short time.

If I had a blazer project in mind, I would first locate a military 1 ton blazer frame to place the civilian body onto, they are stronger and thicker as well. There a few differences in the body mounts depending on the year, but it is an easy fix.

The 700r4 transmission will spit its guts if you try to put it behind a cummins, the torque will kill it quickly. I would use a dodge auto if I was going to keep an automatic in there. The 727 in the older dodges will work well in a light blazer, my preferred transmission would be the 46re though with ad adapter to put a 205 transfer case behind it. (you'll need to swap front driveshaft output sides from the 241d box)

Have you just tolerated the vibration of the 4bt in your jeep or has it not been an issue? Alot of folks complain about the 4bt shake at low idle, I haven't thought it that bad myself.
 
i dont notice it. and it doesnt bother me. not only does it not bother me, my buddy is doing one of the blazers.

what did you do for the engine crossmember?

I reinforced the frame with a front receiver tube hitch assembly, I built it to also strengthen the steering box mount and reduce the roll pitch of the frame when turning. I couldn't do much with the stock crossmember except remove it and duplicate it to fit tight around the oil pan, this didn't do much for strength so I also built another just behind the bellhousing. The truck I did this on was a 1/2 ton pickup (1984 GM). Given the choice, I would rather find a military blazer with the heavier frame. Not to mention a diesel power plant to start with for fuel gauges etc.



Your engine, transmission, transfer case is the only solution I will use for a GM solid axle application. Getrags are garbage and the GM 4 speeds belong in bread trucks, not interstate capable daily drivers The lower rpm of an overdrive is enough justify the cost to me alone. The strength of the nv-4500 verses the puny 465 is not even comparable. As for automatics, they belong in old lady's buicks and urbanized escalades, not my driveway. ;)
 
Hmm, so I've scrapped that idea, I'm rebuilding the one I had, it's going to be a lot easier on a number of fronts, but thanks guys, now I know what I'm going to get myself into if I ever decide to do something like this in the future (which is definately a possibility).

My pleasure, anything for a fellow upstater, ( I grew up around Cortland and Syracuse area). I signed up for the navy on graduation day and haven't been back since except to visit my granma once a year. Montana has all the beauty of Upstate without the Hillary's and Cuomo's.
