CAT Diesel help

This German guy with his mercedes diesel I was talking to at the fuel station today said he puts 1 Gallon of Supreme Unleaded gasoline in then adds the rest diesel to his tank. . he said it does the same thing as any fuel additive would, got me thinking, cool idea but what do you guys think about it? Is it safe to do in our Cummins or is he crazy?

Definetely Crazy!!!!!!!
We've had a couple trucks come in the shop in the last few years that this had happened to accidently. Have seen mixes from 2 gallons of gas to a full 35 gallon tank all the way to straight gas. All created lots of white smoke and horendous engine noise under load. Very bad idea.

It's a GREAT IDEA if you want to destroy your injector pump! The gas will kill all the lubricity in your diesel fuel. The pump needs that lubricity. I had a customer tell me how wonderful the old gas in the diesel trick was one time. I just #ad
and went on.

From the Chevron diesel site;

I accidentally mixed gasoline with my diesel. What can I do?

One percent or less gasoline will lower the flash point of a gasoline/diesel fuel blend below the specification minimum for diesel fuel. This will not affect the fuel's engine performance, but it will make the fuel more hazardous to handle. Larger amounts of gasoline will lower the viscosity and/or cetane number of the blend below the specification minimums for diesel fuel. These changes can degrade combustion and increase wear.
The best course of action is to recycle gasoline-contaminated diesel fuel back to your supplier. People ask if they can correct the problem by adding more diesel fuel to the blend. Usually the answer is no; the amount of additional diesel fuel needed to bring the flash point on test is impractically large. Those who try dilution should have the blend checked by a laboratory before use to be sure it meets specifications.

I have heard it's good to add a gallon or two of diesel to a gasser every once in awhile for the lubricity. I have never tried it and it may be an old wives tale.

What you are creating in effect is very similar to "Jet B" - which is used in military aircraft. Jet B is a mixture of Jet A and 80 octane avgas. It's freeze point is -60c. It is designed for high altitude military that don't have fuel tank heaters. It is extremly dangerous as it can create its own static electricity under flow conditions such as refilling your tank. A number of years ago Eastern Airline had a wing tip blow off a B707 coming out of New Orleans - the cause was Jet B. No one was hurt and the aircraft landed safely.
When I worked in aviation and we came across Jet B we had to reduce flow rate into the aircraft by 50% for 20 flying hours after the Jet B was added. The systems we used had single point nozzles made of brass or aluminum connected to a refueling recepticle under the wing. They were in effect sealed systems and it was still dangerous.
All of the above does not address what others have said - no lubricity.
Happy Trails

That German guy was still pi$$ed over the outcome of WWI and WWII. He would have told you to put brautworst in the fuel tank if he thought you would buy into it. If thats the German way of thinking, no wonder Chryco is in so much trouble right now.

Just had a (not so smart individual) fill the tank on one of our Ford 700 (with a Cummins) with gas. The injection pump is shot and an new one is being sent in. I don't know the price but it is not a good thing. #ad
it was ran a while with the gas!

What are you trying to accomplish? Makes about as much sense as drinking Drano.

This German guy... puts 1 Gallon of Supreme Unleaded gasoline in then adds the rest diesel... . he said it does the same thing as any fuel additive would

Crazy? No. Misinformed and/or ignorant? Yes.
In a very limited sense, what he said is true. In extremely cold weather, additives can prevent gelling. Additives will also help clean injectors. So will adding gasoline. So in that limited way, adding gas is the same as adding other additives. But there the similarity ends. What everyone else said is true and you're risking doing a lot of harm to your pride and joy. Almost guaranteed if you do this at each fill-up. If your wife is dying and it is -60 outside and you need to drive her to the hospital, add one gallon of gas. Otherwise, there is nothing to gain and everything to lose.

I filled up my new truck for the first time today at Flying J. Think ... use the green hose!!! Hope I never forget that.

Saw mucho damage two separate times with a gasoline mixed with diesel problem. First was a Mercedes E300D that had its #3 piston completely melted from the gas messing up an internal of the injection pump and siezed that barrel wide open. I was almost sick when I looked at it. Auto Wurks Diesel brought the engine back from the dead with some sleeves and six new pistons and a new injection pump. The second was a Power choke pickup and it had scorched the insides of its HEUI's and needed 8 new ones. BIG BUCKS. It still didn't run right afterwards. One of our techs took the bad fuel, which was mostly gas, and put it in his late model chevy gas V8 pickup. The knock sensor went haywire and retarded the timing to the point where the engine didn't want to run anymore. Starting it up again and flooring it for the half mile trip home launched a rod through the block. Either way gas and diesel are pumped from separate pumps for a reason!

Probably a little related; one of our airplanes in Viet Nam (C123)had all engines shut down-Two conventional recipts with two jet helpers engines, due to wrong fuel(JP4). 28 dead! Enough said.

My memory may be failing, however I recollect looking at the owners manual for a circa 1964 Mercedes. That manual, if I recall rightly, had an elaborate section for determining how much gasoline to add to a tank of diesel 2 to handle very cold weather, at specific temperatures.

Matt, I remember older Mercedes manuals with charts telling how much Kerosene to add, maybe that's what you are thinking of.

Tim,
According to the instructer I had at Fort Dix back in 1988 there is a diaghram in the injection pump that measures the viscosity of the fuel being fed to it and ajusts fuel rate accordingly. Runs on straight gas were supposed to be limited do to excessive wear on engine. As for the multi-fuels being troublesome, the only ones that gave me trouble were old, ragged out units that had been poorly maintained. The maintenance duece that I was assigned to purred like a kitten and could outrun anything in the batallion(five ton injectors really helped) #ad
especially with five gallons of nav gas added to the tank. Oh to be young and not have to pay for your bombing projects, those were the days.

Could someone please explain how the old military multi-fuel engines operated on either gas, diesel or kerosene and explain what type of injection system would operate on different fuels and not self destruct.
From what little I've heard these multi-fueled engines were troublesome.
Thanks in advanced
Tim

I don't know exactly how the multi-fuel engines worked but when I was a wrecker operator in a 5 ton tractor trailer company back in the central highlands of Viet Nam we would turn up the fuel rate on the injector pump until flames were shooting 2 feet out of the exhaust stack. They would kick butt. We were told that running on fuels other than diesel was for emergency situations only and the engine wouldn't last long that way. The engines didn't last very long as it was, even when unmodified. We were only getting 20 to 25000 mile out of an entire brand new 5 ton tractor before they had to be junked. Driving too fast, with 400% over loadings, on very rough roads caused it.
