I just called my local Dodge dealer for a set of Rear drums. They list for $395 each. Wondered if anyone would have a different place I could order online, or maybe some place to purchase. I have a 92 and I think they are 13" x 3" but have not measured them just yet. My brakes are starting to go and while inspecting them the last time they were off, not much material to put on a turning machine.

THIS all comes back to MY earlier question about "normal" mileage to reasonably expect from the rear brakes on these 1st generation rigs - I've never even had the rear drum OFF of my '91 250 at 103,000 miles... Still wondering about all that, and now wondering how many miles are on YOUR rear drums, to be so worn out?

It is kinda off thread but you fellows might be interested in the brake info How Anti-Lock Brakes Work -

Many cars today are equipped with anti-lock brakes to make stopping safer. Read this fascinating article to learn how anti-lock brakes work!

1990(140,000 miles), 3. 54 gears, W250 5spd(replaced on guarantee), new head gasket at 98,000 miles, Reunel winch bumper, extra front and rear leaves, K&M air filter, Stanadyne fuel filter and Performance Formula Fuel Conditioner, Borgeson steering assembly and modified steering box to stiffen the steering, balanced drive shafts fore and aft, passenger-side rubber mat loose to mop up the water that leaks into the cab, CB and 2 meters(KB7VEJ), above the cab aluminum canopy with kayak/canoe rack. It’s a keeper.

Gary, Not sure if my brake drums are really worn out or not (they are for my mind) but I have not seen what NEW drums look like so I can not give a true answer on that. I have 120,000 on the truck and the shoes were pretty bad when I looked at them. So I plan on replacing them any ways. But it looks as though I only have about 1/4" or drum and it does have a lip on it from the shoes. So I figured I would just replace the drums if they are reasonable too me. Figured, once done, won't need it again for the life of the truck. I do not tow or haul anything so they should last a life time. I called local stores and they only list a 12" X 3" drum. My backing plate measures 13" across, so I will keep looking.

First, look under your hood at the build sticker on underside of hood. Brake size will be listed here. I think you will have 12" X 2. 5" brakes with single rear wheels and 12" X 3" with dual rear wheels. From my experience, I doubt your drums would be worn out if you are not towing. On my W-350 the same drums are used with 2. 5" or 3" brakes making an upgrade in brake size possible.

DMAN, your d-man !!. I just ran out and checked my build sheet. Sure enough, 12 X 2. 5 rear brakes. Thank you. Dodge says $395. 00, local autoparts says $79. 99. Gotta love Mother Mopar. They must sell a lot of parts to the USA Government.

In response to the comment above about the anti-lock brakes, MINE were far more problem than benefit - unlocking and leaving me with only the FRONT brakes to come to a stop if there happened to be the SLIGHTEST loss of traction on the rears, like a small patch of gravel or washboard surface common at stopsigns - made for a few VERY close calls when that happened as I was near the rear of vehicles in front of me at those stop signs...

SOOooo - I unplugged the ABS at the differential sensor, and bridged the leads going back to the 'puter with a 2 watt 22 ohm resistor - PRESTO, no more ABS on the rearend, and NO MORE "surprises" at stoplites! Also, that "fix" fools the 'puter into thinking all is normal, so no warning dash lights to bother...

Recently, when at my local dealer Ichecked the price of the rear drums, bad news they are no longer avaiable. they have superseeded the part, now to replace the drum you will need to replace the hub as well. The good news is that the new drum mounts over the hub and can be removed more easily. More bad news the price was about $1400 cdn to do both sides. I had hoed for convenience that a spare set of drums would be available at areasonable price because I can machine the old ones at work. Also you mentioned that the drum apeares to be 3" wide Whe measured inside it has 3" of surace width machined, the shoe on my truck are only 2. 5" wide. This may be because the drum casting is used for other aplications. If you wish to machine the drums, the maximum safe size limit is cast into the side of the drum, . 080 or . 090 oversize if I remember, my worst drum cleaned up at . 040 over. Also check your parking brake cables and mechanism inside the drum, the lever that pushes the front shoe outward was rusted in the on position, which caused the adjuster to stop working. Had to remove the pin at the top of the backing plate and drive it out of the lever, to free it up and then lubricated it with anti seize compound.

hope this will help Neil
