A buddy just bought a 92 350 with serious steering column issues. First off, he was told that the column in it is from a 97. Is that possible?

The original column was replaced due to carrier bearing(?) failure.

Now the whole column will go up and down. He says it steers fine, but would like to remedy the problem. Is the 97 column a lie? Does he need to find a 92 column or will other 1st gen columns work? Cruise options and so on are not important. TIA, Ian

If it's a 97 column then the steering shaft must have been changed around somewhat because the steering box input spline is different.

I had this problem with my 92 (with the original steering column) several years ago.

I'm a little fuzzy recalling the details of what was wrong, but if I recall correctly the joint between the steering shaft and steering box was worn, although I thought it was odd because there was no play while turning, just the shaft moved up and down.
