92 Tach sending units.

I read that thread on how to run a tach of of the alternator and followed a link to which tach they were using. So I contacted the seller a sent for one. Well, this tach is one designed for use with a sending unit. I. E. magnetic pickup.

Does anyone know where to locate a sending unit for a 6BT? Aparently the folks at AutoMeter Industrial forgot they made this tach and cant even find the model number in their data base.

There are no factory "sending units" on the 92 trucks. The tach signal is picked up from the CPS and routed thru the PCM for tach and other uses. You will need an add on signal pickup with magnets that mount to the damper pulley and a pickup to get the signal. Just be aware it has to be the correct setup for the tach and not all tachs were created equal. The easy way to put a tach on a 92 is get and ISSPRO EVA series and use the factory tach plug under the dash.

If you're refering to the one from "Surplus center" it will work with out the sender.

Paychk is right, hook the signal wire to the wire from the alternator and it will work. My tach has worked flawlessly, and I am happy with it. I really liked not having to spend $80 to $100 for a tach! Several others have gone this route also, and report good results.

Do you know those tachs are Autometer! For what was it? $20 plus another $26 for a gauge cup, that = a big grin. I might be able to get it installed Sunday.

Yes it was from "Surplus Center" and yes its an Auto Meter Industrial tach. BUT!!! This model (#1774) has dip switches for adjusting for drive ratios of . 5:1, 1:1, & 2:1 only. The alternator types (#s1763,1764,&1765) have a potentiometer to "dial in" the proper ratio. If you have more info or if I am not seeing this right help me out.

Thanks Pete and Alan. Did the alt mod just now and tested the tack. Showed 800RPM@ idle. Sweeet!!!

Paychk -Gauge cup?-You got a gauge cup?? Mine is held on w/ a hose clamp(looks snazzy too)

By the way, if you look around, they have other tachs, 1500 and 3000 rpm.

I forgot to thank Swankmetal, he's the one that found the tachs in the first place! I just looked there, they have 5k, 8k, 10k, tachs left but they need the sensor to read the flywheel. I don't know if they will work with my wiring job.
