So I'm at the dealer today, browsing (hey window shopping is okay, right??? - C'mon. . it's called Fishin'... not Catchin') anyways, I decide to drive the biggest and baddest out there. . just to have some comparison to mine. So, I'm looking at this absolutely sweet 2004, 4-door, 4x4, dually, CTD, auto, 4:10, etc etc etc. Sweet rig - I mean damn it is sweet... . and costs $42-something (cough, wheeze... choke). But what the hell, let's take it for a spin and see just what the hype is all about.

Okay, it's quiet - really quiet. . not silent - you can still tell it's a diesel, but it is SMOOTH. Okay, out the parking lot and on the gas. First off - great transmission response - helps to have 4:10's compared to my 3:54's, but okay, the transmission is TIGHT. Nothing DTT isn't going to cure for me. Okay, on the power a little, and hey, there's the turbo... sounds nice, smooth, and really familiar. Mine is louder, but with my Intake it's hard not to be;) . Driving along, power is good - smooth and strong - also very familiar. Now, my rig, thanks to PDR and some goodies, makes more torque at the tires than the advertised 2004 does at the engine, (dealer thought that was a very interesting little factoid too... ) so, um, it feels pretty much the same as mine. Granted it had better feel close, and it is every bit as strong as it is supposed to be.

So, on to the highway... ... and there is the difference. 70 mph came and went in a blink, and the rpms make this new one faster, not quicker, but faster than mine. I'm working the rpm potential on my engine, so I know that's just a BOMB away. The nice feature of the day is the tow-haul button on the auto column shifter knob. It essentially kills the overdrive, or lock-up, maybe both. Nice feature, also one that I will have on mine after DTT has their way with my transmission. I glance at the sticker price and smile, because I know I don't have to pay it every month. Now, about these new rigs - they're new, really new, and quiet, really quiet, and smooth, really, really smooth.

Okay, so my thoughts:

Engine: 1st gen (with $1500 of 'go' mods) and stock 3rd gen - equal. 3rd gen has more top end. 70 mph comparo - equal.

transmission: No question - new transmission wins over 1st gen w/ TCI converter, but not by much. W/ DTT trans I bet the DTT would feel better, and more controlled.

Ride: New 4x4 is as smooth as my 1st gen 2x4, and lots tighter

Interior: I'd be terrified to tackle a gauge install on a new one like I did on my 1st gen erector set dash. New one is just newer.

Suspension: New is new, and reacts like it.

Body, fit and finish: What's your pleasure? New is new. Old is venerable. Personally, I like the older ones because ours are a lot easier to see out of - very difficult to 'know' where the corners are on the 04's.

PERFORMANCE: My 93 -vs- 04: It'd be an awesome race! Power feels the same. 04 would walk away from me over 70 mph. New transmission really helps.

I sort of consider my rig to be in the 'average' side of the typical BOMB'd rigs out there. It's has PLENTY of power, but needs a good transmission to make full use of it. However you go, you will need a transmission sooner or later. The Cummins, especally a bomb'd Cummins, will rip a stocker, getrag or 518, to shreds, only a matter of when.

Overall: If you like the old school and don't mind wrenchin', and want the power of the new stuff, get a 1st gen and BOMB it. If you don't like to do either and want a thoroughbred totally smooth powerhouse, go for the 3rd gen.

Brothers and sisters, depending on your taste and style, you can't go wrong with our Cummins rigs. New is sweet, old is venerable. The '04's are cleaner, sleeker, quieter, nicer, and ride awesome... ... BUT... ... they ain't got nothin' on us 1st gen BOMBers baby! Oh yeah, the diesel tech drove mine, and was smilin' the whole time... !

Happy trails!

Oooooooooo..... close call... we nearly lost one of the guys here..... ok I think we better get the boys together for some much needed "intervention"... . just in case... .

I like my truck, but if I could afford an '03 or '04 I'd be driving one right now. ;) Each has their own high (and low) points... but think about this:

1st Generation + $1500 worth of BOMBs vs. stock '04... equal

1st Generation + $1500 worth of BOMBs vs. '04 + $1500 worth of BOMBs... ... . :D:D:D

Guess I just lost that 5 HP bonus, right Bob?;)

I don't think I'll ever find out - short of winning the Powerball, I'll never have the $45k to buy the one I want. :p

Sambo,

Nice report..... you reminded me why I sit up a little taller when I'm next to a new one at a traffic light!

(Yes, it's the cash that's still in my wallet!!)

Remember back when you were a kid and you got that first ride on a roller coaster.

You hung on for dear life and maybe Mom or Dad went with ya.

Not that little one in kiddy land. I am talking the real fella.

Well, it wasn't to long before you were sitting in the last car waving your arms in the air like it was nothing.

The point is that you get used to it.

If us guys could afford a new truck we would be driving one.

We don't!!!

Long after that smell and new feeling is gone those payments are there.

Not to mention Plates and insurance and that rotten warranty that prevents you from doing any fun Mods.

Most of these trucks can't fit in the average size garage!!!! Old or new.

I ain't paying 42K plus and leave it rott outdoors.

My old reliable starts, Hauls, AC works. Gets more compliments and looks than some newer ones.

It's nice to drive up and squeeze into that spot near the door and walk away without locking the door. Knowing it will be right where you left it when you get back.

Go out and buy some nice tires and wheels and your old one will feel great. Be sure and run the tires at low air so it softens the ride.

My hearing is getting worse all the time so does that mean my old one is getting broke in and smoother? We I could say the same for my kiddney's

Yeah, I wish I had a new one at times. But I don't want to have to work until I am 80. I want to get out of debt and enjoy life. Everything gets old and worn. Including us.

Sides I am a penny pincher.

Bottom line. Don't drive a new one! temptation is a bad thing.

Hey guys, I'll have to agree with EZGZ, lack of a truck payment is nice!!! besides I feel like I am in highschool again, back in the day when I actually worked on my car when it didn't need it! my wife isn't exactly happy about my new lover though ( I spend more time with the truck than I do with her an' she's jealous)!!! My only saving grace and the reason we got the truck is that her late father was a diehard CTD fan! any way I love the simplicity of the 1st gen's and I'm just havin' a blast wrenchin' on my new-to-me truck and drivin' balls to the wall!!

Let me tell ya. With the DTT transmission and a few BOMBs 70mph comes and goes quicker than stink on a nervous polecat. When I was stock 75 was wound out. Now I don't know how fast it will go. I don't dare try. The road just isn't wide enough past 85-90 with that fine 1st gen steering system and over sized tires.

70-75mph = 1900 rpms on my setup. I hardly go over 2k on the tach anymore

Ooooo... hey 'j' wait till you " work you way up to " 105 MPH... man WHAT A RIDE... . :D:D:D:D EEEEEhaaaaa... oh ya... SPREAD OUT GUYS, CUMMINS THRU... .

Pastor Bob ~ Our Lady Of Acceleration Church... . reaching for terminal velocity is THE ride of a lifetime...

I don't know, I still pull the keys and lock the doors. I know there is people that would steal my truck! I can't let'em just take it. If anybody ever does steal it, I better not EVER catch them. I will take my first gen any day. Even with the things that have been braking on it lately, it still cheaper than a truck payment.

Drove my dad's 2nd gen yesterday, got cold sat nite and my truck gelled in his driveway:rolleyes:,, that's a story for another day. His truck runs good, mildly tweaked stock truck with 4"exhaust. Spunky down low, but doesn't pull as hard and as long as mine. When I got mine running, it just felt better to be in my truck.

Owning a first gen is like owning a diesel, they are different, and you gotta love owning one!!

Like the part about setting up higher in the seat:D :D

What are these people thinking??? My gosh.....

You've got relays that control relays and diode after diode, circuit after circuit after circuit... ... ...

This controls that and that controls this

 :-{}

When you'r rig is down due to a corroded fuse, you'r simply dead in the water. I had one of my ISB's shut down on me once. A corroded fuse holder.

I'll stop along the road to assist any 3rd gen owner. Heck, we can both peek under the hood... ... ..... sorta like:confused:
