on my 93 CTD 4x4 on start up in the mornings or after it has been sitting for long enough for it to cool down i start it back up and it chugs like it is starving for fuel and blows white smoke. rev it up for a few mins and it clears right up! plus driving down the road everyonce in awhile the truck will just shut off like i ran out of fuel! ill pull over pump the lift pump starts right up and im off! the injection pump and lift pump have about 20k miles or less on them. i thought maybe the fuel solenoid wire was the problem i messed with it a bit and it was loose and fixed it and i thought that is why the truck shut off from bouncing around it wasnt getting a good connection. but when it shuts off on the road im doing 55-60 and it hesitates get out of the pedal runs fine back into the pedal and 10 seconds later she dies! feels like no fuel? any advice would be great!

i had the truck sitting at a small decline engine pointing down. she fired right up no chug no white smoke! i changed all the connectors on the fuel solenoid everything has a good connection. i forgot to mention when it would chug and blow white smoke if u reved it up it sounds like its missing and or like a backfire real loud pop out of the exhaust! could one of the pumps be letting fuel drain back to the tank or not pumping fuel and that is why i get the chug as it acts like its starving for fuel? or why does the truck just die when im driving down the road like it ran out of fuel? i thought maybe the lift pump was the cause do to one of the check valves in the lift pump didnt work and was letting fuel drain back to the tank or not letting fuel in? need some more wisdom! thanks Andy

Andy,

Check your lift pump pressure just to be sure. Not sure what the spec is exactly, it is in here somewhere. Then, check for any old rubber hoses that may be cracked, rubbed thin, etc. CHeck all your metal line connections as well for leaks. after that, call Piers, Al, or Mark at PDR and talk to them. THey have helped me out a time or two. THey say most of the time it is simple stuff. My 92 would every once in a while stumble, esp under full throttle pulling a load. Let off it, and go again, all was well. Was you rpump rebuilt or new? How old is the lift pump? One more thing, check for any return line blockage or crimps. If fuel is not flowing freely, it can cause problems. And naturally, try a fuel filter change. I've heard of big rigs going through 3 or 4 filters to get through a tank of junk with fuel floating in it. With so few regulations on diesel fuel, anything is possible.

Hope you get running again soon. Stinks to be on foot.

Daniel

The spec is 10psi, after the filter at the "bleed port" you should not have less than 5psi after the filter. A good lift pump and clean filter, will usually show 7-10psi at idle and at rated rpm.

Of course all the things previously mentioned are suspect and warrant close examination.

Good luck,

Andy
