Help.. Need 4BT bellhousing info..

I've been working in Nigeria intermittently for the last year and a half as an engineer (by degree)/construction supervisor (by job description)/mechanic (by necessity) for one of those really big oil companies. I thought I was finished last April, but I was sucked back into the project for more. :{ It's safer than working in Iraq for my former employer KBR/Halliburton, but Iraq may be the only place that significant numbers of Americans work that is worse than Nigeria.

I ordered the wiring diagrams (hard copy) from DaimlerChrysler Publications. The CD service manual came from a little more dubious source, ebay... and that's all I'm going to say about that. You can order the CD from DC for about $100, but it is back ordered at least until the end of the month.

Mark, the dealer is getting me a price on the manual, i have scotts right now and am wearing it out trying to get the wiring that we need worked out, we are gonna have to buy one for chassis and one for trans it looks like because i CANT get the ends, i even tried one of our hotrod wiring suppliers and they say they don't do dodge for that exact reason, they can't get them either! since the motor was new, no salvage stuff... . so let me find out cost from them for both of us. we bought the CD for your truck that was $90 alone, i'm not sure where that is... lol. maybe doug still has it...

will let you know on manual.

Dawna,

Thanks, I'll wait to hear from you.

On the connectors, if obtaining them proves too difficult, and if you have access to both connectors (not imbedded in something) you could replace them both with something you can get a hold of. Good auto connectors are to be found most everywhere... Might work for some.

I like the looks of all your conversions. What are you all doing for the Grid Heaters? Being up in Canada its cold for at least have the year so I will need mine to work. My cab/dash/computer/wire harness was off a 6. 5L will I be able to just have the computer fire the grid heaters in place of the glow plugs or is there something fancy I will have to do? Also, can I run the Dodge Alternator instead of the GM? whats the difference. I would rather run the stock brackets than make something up that doesn't look stock which is what I am after with this conversion... . looks stock!!!!!

I think the ECM that comes with the Cummins will provide signals for the heater, so you only need relays to handle the current. You can buy them (dealer), find them at a wrecking yard, or if you're inventive can probably fabricate some of your own using something like starter or light relays...

The newer ECM's also support regulating alternator voltage by providing a connection for the alternator's field wire. In my case, it's still GM - but we did grab a heavier duty unit (125Amp) when it started squeaking. I think the effort to keep it meant fabricating brackets. Not a big deal.

Ken kept most of the GM pulleys. Mine (93) had serpentine but only 5 ribs instead of the Dodge's 7. Didn't seem to hurt anything, and it allowed us to avoid changing out all the pulleys for things like alternator, A/C, P/S pump, etc. etc.

I bet there are some creative types that can give you ideas here.

Hey mark,

You said that the ECM controls heater grids and can be used to control the alternator as well. What years are you talking about?? I have a 99 24valve that I am in the middle of installing in an old chevy. Is this the case with a 99 or are you talking new new? Thanx in advance... Lowell

Lowell,

I have the schematics for the 3rd Gen, specifically the 04. 5 model (what I have) - so I know it manages the alternator field current with that ECM.

I don't know about yours... but I think the schematics are easier to find for the older units. Perhaps someone else here has a copy and can take a peek?

If not, I'll poke around and see what I can find.
