93 not charging

My dad has a 93 that has the regulator built into the puter thingy, we have had the alternator tested twice and it checks good, they want $250 for the little black box that is behind the battery and they say the regulator is built into this. My 91 has the external regulator mounted on the firewall and I was wondering if there was a way to wire an external regulator to the alternator and make it work this way?????

Check the tack sensor on the front of the motor near the crank pulley. If the computer doesn't know the motor is spinning it won't turn on the alternator. It could also be the asd relay gone bad, it is the in front & the third one from the drivers side hood hinge. Also have you check it for trouble codes?

I think it's called the Auto Shut Down relay or Alternator Shut Down relay. It's mounted right with the other relays on the drivers fender well. I'd have to look to see which one it is exactly.
