I installed a 0-3" lift Thuren Track bar last weekend. I am VERY happy w/ the improvement and was fairly simple to install.

Before I started I test fitted the ¾" mounting bolt in the frame end and noticed that it would not fit through the top. I grabbed a Dremel tool with a sand paper roll and ground about . 005 all around the top. Problem fixed. I think the bolt would have thread through it no problem anyhow.

I have leveling springs on the truck and wanted to center the axle (at least while it's parked). I used a come-along and the left side tow hook (front) and centered the axle under the chassis. I worked alone. I found getting the proper length on the bar was trial & error. I lined up the axle end in the mount hole and then looked to see how the frame end lined up. It has a tapered stud like the OEM bar and I wanted to get a nice straight shot to the hole. After about 5 trys it lined up nice and I was happy with it. You'll see what I mean.

The frame end tapered part on the Thuren Track bar gets thin when it ends. If you look at it the wrong way it dents in. I felt it was easier to test fit it without the bolt. The bolt would have prevented the dents. I used a big drift to fix it. Takes about 5 seconds to re-straighten.

Make sure you have some big opened end and boxed end wrenches. The lock nut on the axle end is 1¼" and the bolt head on the frame end I think was 1+". I could not get a socket to go on it. Not enough clearance between the diff cover. I had to run the bolt through the frame end w/ a wrench. The torque is 300 ft lbs at the frame end. I think I got close to it.

My steering wheel was off center about 10 minutes to the right. I adjusted the drag link and it was fixed.

The Thuren Track Bar really cleaned up the wanderering. I could not believe the improvement. And keep in mind I pulled off a still very tight, Lukes Link'd, poly bushed axle end track bar. The steering has a new "smoothness" feel to it.

I also noticed the front end has much more articulation compared to the OEM bar. I hit a dip in the road, and noticed the front really squatted like I have never felt before.

I am very pleased w/ Don's track bar. It's priced very good. It even came Painted.

If anybody has any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for the info. I was considering the 03 trackbar upgrade but this seems like a pretty good alternative as well.

All I can say is that I have one and I think it's great, I don't know anything about being thin, this puppy is heavy. It's a great option and cheaper than most.

You say the frame end is thin and it dents in? Can you explain a bit more?

Nate,

It's really not a big deal. Kind of hard to explain. There is a tapered sleeve that the big bolt goes through, then that slips into the tapered hole in the OEM frame mount. If the bolt is not through the sleeve, if you bump it against anything it dents in. If the bolt is through the sleeve it can't. If you had the bar you would see what I mean.

Don has recently put the directions up on his site. Now it looks like I may have installed the frame bolt backwards?

"... Install the bolt and washer from the

TOP of the frame boss, slide the new trackbar up"

The frame end bolt is 1-1/8" and the frame end locknut is 1-1/16, I'm quite sure the jam nut for the axle end was 1-1/2" on mine.

I installed mine with the nut up also

Since my lukes link was hitting the diff cover I rotated the top of the bar slightly to the rear for a bit more clearance on the bottom of the ball end.

As stated above, the end of the tapered adapter is thin, its not really a problem, you just cant abuse it, and it doesn't matter at all once it's installed.

Anyone have trouble getting ahold of Don? I've left several phone messages and emails and he has yet to get back to me... I have a few questions.

Don has been moving his shop and also I believe he moved himself this last month, so he has been hard to get a hold of.

as fars as the "thin" piece, its a "crush sleeve" it basicly goes through the tappered part and is suppost to "crush" inside the tappered hole in the frame if I remember correctly. and yes, his stuff is BEEFY! :D

This is what Don says on his web site:

4-27-05 UPDATE!!!FINALLY INSTALLED A TRACKBAR ON AN 01' 3500 DUALLY AND GOT MORE THAN A RUB. MORE LIKE

A "SMACK". I WENT BACK AND CONTACTED ALL MY CUSTOMERS HAVING SIMILAR TRUCKS TO

SEE IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY ISSUES WITH NOT EVEN A RUB REPORTED. I'M THINKING THE 01'

AND UP TRUCKS HAVE SLIGHTLY LONGER CONTROL ARMS OR A MORE ROTATED AXLE MAKING

THE TOP OF THE DIFFERENTIAL COVER CLOSER TO THE TRACK BAR PIVOT UNDER SUSPENSION

COMPRESSION. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING PURCHASING THIS TRACKBAR A TYPICAL SPRAY PAINT

"RATTLE CAN" LID IS THE EXACT DIAMETER OF THE NEW SPHERICAL BEARING CUP I USE FOR MY

TRACK BAR. THE LID CAN BE PUT OVER THE FACTORY BAR JOINT TO SEE IF YOU HAVE THE

CLEARANCE TO RUN THIS TRACK BAR. OTHER THAN THIS ONE INSTANCE SO FAR FEEDBACK HAS

BEEN GREAT! PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS.

DON THUREN.....

I have an 01 3500 with the D25's and have NOT noticed any problems with contact, of course I'm not doing any serious off-roading. I'm thinking with the stock prings you might have an issue because this would be so close together. Longer arms would make a difference but in general I don't think it would be required.

Is there any chance of the front diff hitting the uni-ball? I heard it was close. What about with 1/2" longer trac arms?

Kevin ,

I have D25 springs and Fabritech's 1/2" forward upper and lower links. There is a mile of room.

That is exactly what i wanted to hear. Thanks! Also I did not know fabritech made longer links

Kevin,

My upper & lower links aren't from Fabritech, they are from DT. I don't know what I was thinking. They are the 1/2" forward ones. I am glad I didn't get a DT Track bar though. Their links are OK.

Ok I knew that dt made them I was just hoping to find a cheaper source for them. Thanks. Anybody want to buy a 3rd gen track bar and mount for a second gen?

It looks like the bar has hit the front diff cover a few times in 2 years. I have only heard it once. No big deal. The picture makes it look worse.
