T-shirt design...

The company I work at is thinking about buying a '94 Ford truck 7. 3 with turbo. I don't know much about these. They do have a mechanical injection pump don't they? Anyway what they want is for me to find out if the power can be turned up some on these. If so can someone give me some tips? Thanks,

Mark

Given '94 was the first year for the 7. 3L PSD, I'd be a little leary of it. It could probably be OK, but I'm always that way on first year production of anything. Like to wait 'til the bugs, if any, get worked out.

My grandpa had a '97 PSD 'til he had to sell it with the 5er when they traded for the Bounder. Treated him real good.

No fuel injection pump on these. It is the HEUI injection. The unit injectors are under the valve cover, as are the glow plugs.

There is a high pressure oil pump that feeds the oil to the injectors. That and with the solenoids are used to fire the injectors.

One thing to check, some of the early ones had a tendency to rub through the grommets/haresses that run under the valve covers to the injectors.

These engines (as all wet-sleeved engines are) are also prone to cavitation erosion. MUST use coolant additives like FW-16 (get from Ford dealer) or other recommended additives.

BOMBable, yep.

Some of these I found in the Powerstroke Registry (PSR).

I wouldn't mind the mechanical injected PS in 94. They have been pretty reliable from what I have always heard. It would be the direct injected ones. The first couple years were total nightmares.

From what I understand it is not a PSD so it must be an early '94. I would rather they didn't go for it since I will be the one working on it. They are on a budget and are thinking they could maybe get two of these for the price of one '99 or so PSD. It has been rebuilt with 40k on the rebuild.

CumminsPower;

From what i read about these early engines was that the turbo was on the small side, and ATS of Salt Lake added a larger turbo and it made a world of difference. They also smoked a lot.

just my penny's worth.

They can be turned up... turning a screw on the fuel pump is all that is needed. But, these things can get REAL hot. They can't run more than about 12-15lbs of boost --- Max, or the head gasket will go.

Get a down pipe from ATS or Banks, guages and turn up the fuel some... they actually perform quite well.

I had a 1994 Powerstroke with a 5 speed. I killed it at 76,000 miles. Shot a glow plug right through the valve cover. I'd be scared if the first year of ANY engine.

EDIT

I had this truck since it was new, and it was well maintained, but driven and towed hard. 2nd and 3rd gear also went at 68,000.

BTW- here is a link to a page that shows you how to turn up the pump. But as others have said it is easy to get over fueled. Proceed gradually and make sure you have a pyrometer

If the '94 Turbodiesel had an automatic... . it is an IDI motor. If it had a 5-speed... ... chances are pretty good it is a PS. The 5-speed had its own issues in the dual-mass flywheels falling apart.
