Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 94 auto 260k slips out of gear

Hey guys I've got a friend with a 94 thats he says it pops out of gear when he his a bump and goes into neutral He said the gear selector doesn't seem the have much friction at the streering colum. He climbed under the truck by the trany and had someone move the selector thru the gears and he couldn't see anthing loose outside the trany. He wondered if there is something worn or broken inside. I seem to remeber reading a thread about adjusting the selector at the trany but I can't remember the entire thread and I'm not sure this is his fix. All comments welcome, Thanks guys. .

If there is little or no resistance to movement of the shifter lever I would suspect that the detent ball has somehow exited its place on the valvebody shifter plate. You would have to remove the transmission pan to see if this is the case. bg
