OK guys, here goes.

94 auto 245000 mi, I know I'll get a bunch of different opinions and experiences but, I'd like to start up grading for a little more towing HP without going nuts. keeping EGTs down so i don't have to mess w/ turbo.

One step at a time so I know what does what and how much.

Let'em role!

My second post.

Many reads!

WE FLUSHED BOTH JOHNS THANK GOD!

you could get a #6 tst plate for your truck. the tst plate take you form 160 hp stock to 230 hp and 605 torque form stock of 400. they are easy to install also.

A #10 plate and a set of 215hp injectors will add some good punch. I had the 215hp injectors in my truck before I switched to the 370s. A bump up in timing well also help too, somewhere in the range between 15-16*. Just beware the BOMBs are a very slippery slope.

Nathan,

I lhave a 95 5spd and was considering going to 215 injectors. What differences did you find between the 215 land 370's? I am not looking for big power changes, just a little bump.

Welcome

First, welcome to the TDR. Next if you have a stock transmission with 245K miles, then you should not do any serious HP upgrades without budgeting for a new upgraded transmission. With that many miles on the trans, it is probably on it's last legs even with stock power.

For just a little extra HP, Pull the AFC housing off, and slide the fuel plate full forward. Reinstall the AFC housing full forward. Cost= $0. 00 Added HP around 20 or so.

Next get the timing set to 16* and add a set of 3GSK governor springs This will improve the usable rpm range of the engine, and make towing much easier. The cost will vary with the shop you deal with.

The above two items should not destroy an otherwise healthy stock trans, if it is driven correctly. And will give a noticable difference when towing.

In my opinion any additional HP from a fuel plate, or bigger injectors is asking for transmission problems with a stock transmission.

Just for example, I installed a #10 plate, 3GSK kit, and bumped the timing on a '96 auto trans truck [with 10K on a 'rebuilt' stock trans], it would slip the TC lockup clutch at will, I had to move the plate fully to the rear to stop the slipping.

I hope this helps, Greg L

94 auto upgrade

metwuk,

I would start with the trans. Any upgrade will vomit that trans. I would also put in a triple disc converter. You can do searches for same.

My next move would be 3,000 gov & afc spring kits. These are your biggest bang for the buck.

The plate is next, if your budget allows, followed by injectors. If you buy a plate at TST, they will exchange it for $50 on a new one later.

Don't forget to drain & check the rear end.

:-{}

I'm sure your $$$$$ :--) will dictate your moves.

Welcome to the HP & TQ  arena.

The difference between the 215s and 370s is a rather large gap. Mostly the smoke, before the 370s it would smoke now it just rolls the smoke out. As far as power wise the 215s gave a good bump up from the stock injectors and they worked pretty well with the #10 plate. Towing it was better than stock but I'd give it a 5 on the seat-o-pants meter (stock being 3. 5) towing with the 370s is an 8 (esp. once I hit TC lockup).

trans upgrade

Sorry, I forgot to mention transmission upgrade is already on the list. I know it needs it. And the plate is slid a bit already and screw adjusted slightly. Thanks so far.

I have almost the same truck that you have except I swapped in a 5spd, I have been happy with the tinkering I have performed and do not think it would destroy your auto trans. Slide that plate all the way after grinding that 1/8th in. nub off of it and sloping the profile back in that area, remember a little goes a long way. Then get a boost elbow or just pinch it off or disconnect your W/G. How much boost are you pushing now. I can peg 26 and sustain if on a hill with some load just over 20.

But, some of the things I have begun to wonder about my truck, what is the turbo we have on this truck (WH1C) capable of making boost and power wise, and how many of the parts for other turbos (HX's n HY's) such as 16cm exhaust housings, fit our trucks? As I understand it according to an article turbo facts www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.ht this turbo spools rapidly (seems to) for reduced emissions. What is the max boost before turbo rupture as I understand it the HX's n HY's are safe to about 40#,is this right. (not according to the turbo facts article) Why are our trucks singled out on ebay for certain mods sugesting not to install injectors and cam plates, is it because of the trany's or the turbo's.

Thx

If you are going to tow anything of size, when you do the transmission upgrade, get the upgraded input shaft and install an exhaust brake. That can be a life saver.

I don't know about the other transmissions that are available but the DTT will hold lockup when you let up on the throttle which is a real plus when using the exhaust brake.

Touching the brake pedal releases the TC so a "Mystery Switch" is a necessary addition.
