6BT to 4BT?

I have an old 94 Ford F-350 with this old 7. 3L IDI Turbo diesel in it. I think it has a ZF4500 transmission(5spd manual)? The engine is getting pretty tired. I was thinking about swapping in one of those Cummins motors from the same time frame. I want the manual injector pump style motor. Will this transmission bolt up or would I need to get a different transmission? What outher unforseen problems could I expect with a converson of this type? Is there any specific year motor that I should be looking for? Maby better castings ect... I would ideally like to make about 400HP. Is this a achievable goal?

To answer a few of your questions, the trans is a ZF5, assuming its original. It wont bolt right up to a 6bt motor, and will require a $700 adapter plate from FordCummins.com If you want to go with the best 12V, a 94-98 12V with P7100 injection pump is the ticket. VE pump'd trucks will put out 350hp without too much trouble, but the P7100 trucks make power like nobody's business. Several factors to consider are Alternator, Power Steering, and AC, not to mention the transmission issues. I believe there is a thread in the Cummins Conversion forum about swapping a 6bt into the 92-97 body style trucks. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Yep, that's probably a ZF S5-42 transmission. I like the ZFs. I have a 95 as you can see from my sig. I have the ZF S5-42 transmission but I am upgrading to a ZF 6 speed so I can run a dual disk clutch from SB. You can't upgrade the ZF 5 speed to a 1 3/8" shaft like you can with the NV4500. I have run my 5 speed for 25K now with no problems. I used the ford a/c and alt. and a 99 ford intercooler. I think the best motor is a 96-97 215 hp 5. 9L. FordCummins is coming out with some new motor mounts for these trucks and I'm waiting for some. The old ones I have on there are not holding the power. You can PM me if you have any questions.
