Stuck in Austin
So my truck seems to have an intermittent problem. I Drove from WI to TX, it ran great for about 200 mi. then started running funny like it's got a fuel problem. The Rpm's would drop a little then come back up w/ loss of power. If I let off the throttle it would die. So I went to a truck stop for a break & let the truck cool down a little, started it back up with no problems until maybe 100 mi. Well this went on most of the way here until I made it to Austin. Driving around town it seemed OK until I went on the hwy 60-65 mph. I tightened all my fittings (I have new marine hose and metal brake line with brass fittings) and hose clamps, drove the truck around for 3-4 days everything seemed great. Yesterday was a little warmer, got stuck in a lot of traffic, stopped to get lunch, truck cranks over for a second (which indicates i'm going to have problems), trucks idle is up and down then dies. My fuel filter, lift pump & overflow valve have low miles, haven't changed any of the sealing washers though. I bypassed the fuel strainer a couple months back thinking the elbow hose going to the lift pump might be leaking (it never fit well when I replaced it) I put an inline wix filter before the lift pump i think it is for a 3rd gen dodge. I've never had the wif light come on so I pulled the filter today and 1 wire broke off. Could i have water in my filter? I also pulled a vacuum on the sensor, it didn't hold at all.
I need to get back to WI. sometime.

I would change the fuel filter first thing. You may have gotten some bad fuel on the trip. If the wire was broke to the WIF you could ahve missed the warning. You said you bypassed the screen, maybe crap from the tank is clogging the screen as you run it, then when you shut it down the crud settles to the bottom and when you run it again it starts all over again. Just my opinion. Also, get several fuel filters and keep them handy. I had a bad fuel problem and went through several before it got cleaned up.

Could there be an air leak on the wif sensor? I brought 2 filters along so I'll put a new 1 on tomorrow.

I noticed when it runs bad at idle you'll sometimes hear a click when the idle speed changes. Also the fuel pressure is usally @ 25psi, sometimes will drop to 19-20 on acceleration then if you let off throttle it will go up to 30 then drop back to 25.

Truck ran great for a day... . Got to Austin Speed Shop, let it sit for half hour, tried starting it, cranked for about a second, ran ok, then idle changed, then died. I'm getting very tired of this. Does any one know where I could take this in Austin?

I've been in Austin a week longer then I should have been, I really need suggestions! Anyone have the part #'s for sealing washers that go above the fuel filter, the feed line going into the injection pump and the one's for the overflow valve? How 'bout a cummins dealer in Austin!!

Yeah I also pay to be on here! I thought someone on here might have some advice of a good cummins dealer or a repair shop as opposed to a bad one. Can't search those kinda things out on google.

Really! Like Injector pump plunger? You're the first one to suggest that. Unfortunately I had to leave the truck at a friends house, I took a 28hr train ride home to Wisco. I will look into that whenever I get back to Austin. I'm also thinking my filter relocation may have caused a restriction/ filter might be too fine. So I will restore back to using the prefilter (& make sure the elbow hose is new and tight) prescreen.

We had a lift pump go bad with similar (not the same) conditions. It would run fine for days at a time, then be hard to crank (with rough idle) then not rev, and die. After changing fuel filter we changed the lift pump--which cured the problem.

The lift pump was only about 3 months old (cummins), which replaced it for free for me.

I have read on another forum that the 160 injection pumps used in the '94 and '95 trucks have a plunger sticking problem. So try this the next time it does it. Pour a bucket of water on the IP and see if that helps. If it does then you need to take the IP to a shop to get it fixed.

I noticed when it starts running bad at idle it will go from normal idle to running rough back to running smooth, but it will click when it makes this change almost like something is sticking!! I'm really thinking it's injection pump. I'll try the bucket of water thing asap.
