Have 350,000 on my 95 2500. Had the nv 4500 and 241 overhauled at 250,000 after spinning 5th gear. Now with 100,000 on the on the rebuild, 5th gear is moaning and under compression the shifter starts to chatter, jumps back and forth. Drained the fluid and found 3 large gear teeth in the main case.

Question is, why does the sifter act so funny and where did the gear teeth come from in the main case. ? I suspect the teeth may have come from the revese idler gear? Since the overhaul it has always been hard to get into reverse, but guessing?? Is there any way for gear teeth to get from the tail shaft housing to the main case?

And what is the best way of getting this all turned around. I use this truck a lot and need to keep it going.

Thanks, Rodger

Ogravy this is not so much help but a comment. I purchased a used 1997 2500 with 75,000 miles. Wife and I drove it for several years with no trouble because we double shifted always. Pulling a trailer one trip we hit a bad bump and lost every gear. Opening it up we found not a single tooth on the front gear in the case and three freshly sheared gears. It appears that we had been driving for years with only those three teeth.

Sooo, I am thinking that if maybe you double shift you can stretch it before you do another rebuild. I do not know, but a thought.
