Ok, I am in a bind. '96 Auto with 247 miles. Starts up cold and runs ok until you cut the A/C on. Then truck starts to act like it wants to stall and sometimes will stall. Also the truck when hot alot of the time but not all the time, will crank and NOT start a lick. Let it sit for 1/2 or so and will start but takes a few more seconds to fire.

What are some possible items for me to check? This is really weird.

Thanks all for your help.

Is it stalling at idle? If so the idle needs to be set higher. Mine is on the border line and sometimes dies at idle--I just need to set it a little higher and haven't done it yet.

In order for it to start the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid has to open. Check it the next time it won't start.

Also, if you don't have a Manual for your truck Geno's is selling them for about $55! It will be the most worth-while $55 you ever spent!

I agree with rrausch dieselworld engine idle to low you need to bumb it up a little so engine won't stall when you turn on a/c.

The hard starting sounds similar to an gas engine with a flooding problem.

But I think it is your return fuel line hose leaking or sucking air.

I thought it mite be your return fuel valve staying closed (usually they stick open but occassionally they won't open) this mite give you a flooded condition but i'm not sure.

Try starting it by pressing on the pedal a little. If that helps then your idle is too low for sure.

I don't think you can get a flooded condition in a diesel. If the overflow valve sticks closed there will be too much pressure in the fuel supply part of the injection pump. May be tough on seals, but I don't think you can cram any more fuel in an injection barrel than normal no matter how high the pressure is.

Ok I will adjust the idle up, where should it be around 850 in Park?

Also I did notice that the linkage that the fuel stop soloniod activates was almost siezed. I checked another 12 valve engine and it moved easy with my finger. So I sprayed some silicon spray and moved it around with my finger. Could this be the prob??? I guess I need to remove the sollinoid and clean it.

The idle should be at least 750 in Drive with the AC on. 800 is better.

If the solenoid is sticking that sure is not helping things. If it runs ok except for starting and idle then the solenoid is probably not a problem. YET!

It won't help any moving hard. Could prevent you from getting enough/any fuel. Also check the ball studs on the throttle linkage to see if they are stiff too.

Ok I adjusted the idle and it is now perfect with A/C on and in drive. The linkage to the idle stop is now free and working properly.

The only other item is when I first start the engine, it runs rough for about 45 seconds just like a gas engine that is misfiring. And some blue smoke. After reving up hard a few times it idles perfect and no more smoke. Starting warm is perfect also. I think it is air in one of the lines maybe??

It is possible. There are 2 short rubber fuel lines that can be bad, but don't always leak fuel. They can, however, let air in the system. I suspect I'll be doing the same soon. They're about 2' long or so. Different sizes. 5/16" and 3/8", I think. Needs to be diesel rated hose.
