pulling stock trailer with 1 1300lb horse 5th gear 70mph grinding noise developed. stopped to ck things out. gears shift ok but noise continues with clutch out but goes away with clutch in. got a trailer to haul pu home and after cool down no noise clutch in or out. my thinking is input shaft bearing. have not had time to pull plates and inspect oil and inside of trans. fluid level is ok. anyone else had this experience? 2500 with 325k.

No matter what you will have to drop the trans. It sounds to me like the release bearing is fried, but at the very least I would replace the pilot bearing at the same time. If you can move the input shaft sideways you might be correct about that bearing. All the NV4500s I had that failed (quite a few) grenaded before I got somewhere to find out where the noise was coming from.

Pilot bearing, throwout bearing, shaft bearing, clutch pressure plate...variety of things.

Won't know until you pull it.

Mystery solved. Throw-out bearing shot. Inside of transmission checked out good. Replaced pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, and clutch. Runs out good. Not bad for 325k of work.
