on a 95 ram 12v

its about 10deg F and i was driving home and my check eng light came on. turned it off and check the oil coolent. oil is alittle low but not bad. anyone know how to get the code out of my truck or what could couse the light to come on. Thanks for the help.

sometimes it just a sensor misreading. and after awhile it may go off. but if you want it off right away, i not sure if you can disconnect the battery and it will clear 'um or just take it to an autozone or advanced auto parts and they'll clear it for no charge. they will even tell you what the code was. that happened to me on my 05 when i put on the quad connector wrong. i new what the codes were but they cleared it no problem. no lights since. hope this helps.

What can cause a CEL on a '95? Anybody know? The only time I ever see it is at bulb test time when I first turn the key on. NO way to throw a code to turn on the CEL on a 12 valve with a P7100 pump as far as I know.

Maybe Crank Position Sensor ?. I think I have read some where around here that a problem eventually comes up with the sensor where it mates with the engine harness.

Dave

No crank position sensor on a '95. The only things electronic that involve the engine is the TPS on an automatic transmission truck and the RPM sensor on the front crank pully. Never heard of a CEL for either one of those things. If I'm missing something here please enlighten me. Remember it's a '95 12 valve engine. No electronics involved with running it.

Couldn't remember the term so I used the CPS. The RPM sensor is what I read about the wiring connector problem. Turning on the CEL is only a guess. Not much in the way of electronics back then. Maybe coolant sensor ?.

Dave

I think the problem may be some moisture frozen in a connector somewhere. The gassers had electronics and could easily cause a CEL. The light is there for the diesel because every time I start up it goes on for the bulb check. I can't imagine anything on the engine that could cause it. If there is I would like to know about it. If the fuel solenoid is replaced by a pull cable the engine will run even if the batteries are removed after it starts.

On these older trucks you cycle the ing. sw. 3 times , on to off not start pos. quickly , then the lite should flash the #s for code, and to clear disconnect the batt. for 10 sec. , but do not clear till you get code becouse then you cann't . and like the other guy side you can get that looked at by some of the doityourself parts stores .

You can cycle the ignition and get the code. The only one I have ever had is when for some reason after the grid heaters go off the alternator charge meter doesn't bump back up to 13. 9 volts. If it stayed on long enough I would get the CEL and can't remember what the code was. It essentially indicated the alternator wasn't charging enough. Shut if off and restart and back to normal. Still does it every now and then, but the alternator and the batteries are still good.

Aha! There is a way to get a CEL on a '95. Now I will know what to look for if mine ever does it. Thanks Thomas.

I bet a truck with EGR could turn it on as well, if there was problem with the EGR system.

Would any transmission prblems turn it on as well? They have some electronics too.

I would think oil pressure would do it also.

Dave

I had a broken wire once that killed the oil pressure gauge. I don't remember the CEL coming on for that. Maybe it did, but I was kind of excited when I saw no oil pressure and the warning light with the drippy spout on the instrument panel.

No '95 had an EGR valve. That started Jan 1,'96 so there are a few CA '96 trucks without it.

The only electronics involved with the 47RH transmission used in '94 and '95 trucks was OD and lockup. The transmission governor is a mechanical thing using a flyweight. I've messed around a lot with mine (some screwups involved) and never managed to get a CEL.

All the above made my wonder how you could get a CEL in a '95. A '96 with an electronic governor for the trans I could understand, but not a '95. So I asked. Be surprised what you can learn by asking questions. :)

Sorry for the wait had to pull a double @ work

I had to pull a double at John Deere product engineering center.

I checked my voltage and I'm @ 12. 10v so as soon as it worms up i plan check things out. i hurd that sometime the int. heater sticks on. but i thank the light would stay on. I thank it is the alt. I'll check the output at the alt. and check the bats. I would like to go to the gel cell battiers but i want to have threaded top post and get new end if the cable are the long enough to do it. I'll let you now what happens.

If one or both of the batteries are bad it will give you CEL. Try load checking your batteries to eliminate that possibility.

crabman :)

Mine did it for a fuel problem, I changed the filter and all was well. That was 6 years ago when that happended, never have seen it on since(other than when starting the truck)

Surfbeetle,

I would like to have that explained. There are NO electrical connections to the fuel system on a '95 other than the fuel solenoid and the WIF sensor. There are NO sensors of any kind connected to the fuel solenoid circuits so the PCM cannot detect anything wrong that I know about to cause a CEL. I have had a wet WIF sensor that caused that light to go on, but no CEL. I also had a bad WIF sensor, no CEL.

I have never had a CEL on my truck. The air conditioning system had some problems. More than once. No CEL. I have had some fuel system problems. No CEL. I have had batteries go bad. No CEL. I have had no problems with my alternator so I don't personally know if that will cause a CEL. It sounds reasonable that the alternator may cause it. Batteries might cause it.

Joe,

I know, it didn't make sense to me either, but at the time, the only thing that I did was change the fuel filter and I have never seen the light on again except when starting the truck. It was probably a coincidence, I don't know.
