Howdy all,

Was called to help a fella that is in town with his 95 12v. Brought it here to have a friend help him install a #8 plate, 3k gsk and stacks. Installed the plate and springs, started it and it revved real high then died. A fair amount of white smoke. Changed everything back to stock thinking they did something wrong and it tried to start twice, but now nothing. He has been working on it for a few days. He is from Ohio and is stuck here until it is fixed.

At this point it will not fire at all. There appears to be plenty of fuel at the injectors. I cracked them all and he cranked the starter until there was plenty of fuel squirting out. I checked everything I could think of relating to fuel and air. Now, they did say that one of the gsk studs in the pump was bent when they went to do the initial install. Presumably it was like that prior to them getting in there. The previous owner had messed with a few things as the factory seals were not in place, but the plate was stock.

Not sure if it is possible for timing to slip bad enough to cause a no start. I don't have a timing tool set to check anymore. Perhaps the pump itself is bad?

Please help!

Thomas.

ps. the truck is 95 dually, auto, back to stock now.

I don't know much about the internals of the P-pumps and what is involved in the fuel plate, but the only way I know that the timing can slip is on the drive shaft in the timing cover.

Best way to check is to SLOWLY rotate the engine around by hand while pushing in on the timing pin until it clicks into the timing mark in the gear. Then pull the timing lock pin cover off the side of the P-pump and remove the lock pin (slightly rear of center, bottom edge, 15/16 wrench IIRC and have a catch pan ready, you are going to loose a couple cups of oil) and look inside and see if the timing tab is pointing straight out. If not, you are probably goingto have to reset the timing.

Easier to do this with an "A-B" light (Bosh tool). I have one, they are hard to find and you are on the wrong end of the country.

When it revved real high, how high is real high? Over 4k? Its possible the timing slipped, if the nut was at all loose, very high rpm quickly could spin the shaft. Might be a good idea for him to invest in a timing kit (as I see you no longer have a 12v).

Cant think of anything else that could do it, other than possibly a dead pump, but then you wouldnt get any fuel at the injectors... would you?

Good luck

Thanks for the replies guys. That is basically what I am thinking. I'm trying to find someone local with a timing set. Its the holiday weekend so of course (understandably) nobody is open and I don't know any 12v diesel heads out this way anymore. When I get back to the truck I'll check the timing pin as you said.

I don't know how high it revved. That happened before they called me, but they seem to think it was at least over 3k. I'll keep trying for the guy.

Thanks
Thomas

I'd be more inclined to think the governor came unwound if it over revved, like maybe they turned a screw they weren't supposed to.

First step in finding a problem after something has been recently done, is go back to what was done and double check everything.
