So it have a 96 12v, i have had the truck for about 8 months and yesterday i lost tach, charging and cruise. Did some digging and found out its probably the ess, so i replaced it, gaped to .50 with non magnetic feeler gauges and still didnt work. So i checked the plug to the ess and it was all good, checked the ground wire and it seemed to be good, checked the power wire to the ess and have the required 5v to it (all readings were taken on the engine harness side of the connector to rule it out). I then tried to simulate the damper with a wrench and the readings changed like it was working. put it on the truck and it acts like it doesnt read the damper being there no matter how close it is for the most part, it did a few times but as soon as you start the truck and shut it off and test it, it again acts like its not there. Im starting to think its just a weak sensor as its a 80 dollar one from autozone, i have tried 2 sensors at this point with no change. I would like to get it working as soon as possible, any insight is appreciated!

There are three wires. The one you didn't mention could be broken or shorting out. In the '96 manual the diagram is on page 8W-30-46
