I saw a 96 3500 4x4 on a lot near my house and took it for a drive. It hadn't been started up in six weeks and put out a fair amount of blue smoke until it warmed up and than it stopped. Condition is OK but the odo had been fixed and it was sold as an inaccurate odo at 69,000 miles- it is anybodys guess what the actual mileage is. It was traded in at a dealer in North Carolina. No rust. Ran OK- the old 12 valve was quieter than my new 24 valve- go figure. I am thinking of a project truck to spruce up and paint as a public service vehicle for my local Police Unions- fund raising, community service and appearances etc. What are some glaring problem areas to look for? I may take it to Cummins Atlantic if they let me for a check. It is an auto and was a little sluggish so I am probably looking at a rebuild. The engine compartment shows a FRAM oil filter- very bad sign and a cheap small spin on fuel filter- not Fleetguard or Mopar and a lot of grime. Suggestions please- they want 16,000 and I will laugh at them and ultimately can probably steal it. BTW a 99 Powerstroke F350 sitting next to it would not start- "glow plug relay"- I gave her back the keys and started up the 96 Cummins first try. Thanks.
