My buddys 96 CTD isn't charging and I was wondering if it is more common to lose the alternator or the voltage regulator. Also is there a way to tell which one is the problem? The batteries are brand new.

Thanks all!

It's probably more common to loose the alt. ($$) vs the voltage regulator which is in the computer ($$$$$). When my alt. went it would test fine off the truck but would not charge on the truck, not exactly sure what was wrong w/ it but a new alt. cured the problem. I dont remember the exact tests to do but there are several posts w/ alt. troubles

Bob is right on. It's a quick test and even if you can not measure the output current, your dash voltlmeter should go up significantly when the field sees full battery voltage. This will establish that the alternator is working OK.

Also, is your tach working? Loss of the engine speed sensor inhibits the computer from demanding a charge.
