Archived 96' just died

Well It's 7:30 and I'm stuck at work. I was parked at an idle "trying" to talk to somone, the cummins began to idle rough then died and wouldn't start again, got a few rumbles out of it. Kinda felt like it ran out of fuel but it didn't. Wondering where I should start? Any known issues?

Did you give it a little pedal when you tried to start it? Will it start if someone holds the fuel solenoid up? Do you see any fuel leaks? If you pump the manual prime button does it feel like you have some pressure? If you loosen the filter bleeder screw and pump the prime button do you get air or clear fuel out of the bleeder screw?

Thanks Joe. I went back under the hood with some day light. confirmed the solenoid is pulling itself up. I was pushing air through the bleeder when hand pumping, pulled up my hand and it was covered with fuel. Looks like the hand pump itself is leaking. Wonder if I can rebuild it.

Really cheap fix for that. Take the old O-ring and get one like it for about 50 cents. Remove the rubber button cover. The button unscrews pretty easy. Be carefull because it's plastic. The large O-ring around the button is the usual leaker when this happens.

Thanks again. It was the large o-ring and the little one didn't look so hot either. I had an o-ring kit with the correct sizes so it worked out. When the o-rings were fixed it turned out I had another leak in the Lp-fuel heater hose.



What a **** to prime... even with compressed air in the tank.

Alot of people talk about the supply/return lines dryrotting. My issue was the liftpump softline just like you. I would also suggest checking the fuel preheater filter and gaskets. Mine also needed attention. The kit is way cheaper at Cummins.
