Had to replace my lift pump again. Quite a job and the pumps aren't cheap either.

The original pump went bad at 96k; started leaking at the stem seal of the white plastic hand plunger. Only used it to prine about 6 or 7 filters. Replaced that pump to today at 138k. I was unable to prime the filter I had replaced. The hand plunger would not pump; the plunger had worn out, and after using it to prime only 2 filters.

The fuel I use is clean; I've had the tank down twice for other repairs and it was clean on the bottom with no sludge or dirt.

Is there some type of fix for these cheap plastic plungers or some better pump that can be used???

The cost and aggrevation factor is why many of us move to some kind of aftermarket fuel delivery system. I went to a FASS system on my 12v because the cost to replace the lift pump, factory fuel heater and the labor was almost as much as the FASS was installed. It also removed my having to imitate Gumby to change the fuel filter assembly at service since it was relocated back to the rear of the truck under the bedside.

The FASS has performed flawlessly so far and was worth every penny. Its just a shame mine is less than a year old and did not recieve the lifetime warranty which was just placed on them now. No matter if you choose AirDog or FASS either are great pumps and will do what you want them too and both have the lifetime warranty coverage... ... . Andy

Are you using Cummins pumps? They are ususlly good for over 200k. The leak at the primer button can be repaired with a o-ring too.

Fuel pumps

Yes, the pump was a Carter, Made is USA that I purchased from a Cummins dealer.

How do you repair the worn plunger; it's only plastic? The pumps I had, both the original and the replacement, are not like the drawing shown in the repair manual. Neither has "o" rings. These is only a square stem seal in the bore body. I tried the "o" ring suggestion but it won't fit under the large nut that holds the plunger together.
