Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 97 - 12 valve with torque plate

I just acquired a 97 -12 valve truck that is supposed to have a torque plate installed in it , 1st where is this located & is it much of a job to remove it? what are the pro's & con's of having this , It really has alot of pickup but it also kick's out the black smoke when you get on it, any info. appreciated thank's John.

it gives you move hp and will also depending on setup give inproved gas milage other name for it is fuel plate and cam plate. the plate is located just in front of the fuel filter under the afc housing which has the fuel shutoff soleniod mounted beside it give the other guys a chance to read this they have pic or look down a few thread another guy ask about the fuel plate and there is a picture and a web site posted in there.

Can see the plate in the 1st and 2nd pic. In the top pic, you can also see the governor lever, where it hits the plate. The arm follows the profile of the plate. The farther forward it moves, the more fuel it can give.

Adjusting the position of the plate can reduce smoke and power. Adjusting the starwheel will affect smoke at take off. I recommend using your foot as a control. My 96' had 700 ft tq with the plate modified and slid forward. I could take off with very little smoke or take off with a pretty good smoke show.
