Replacing rear axle seals and rear brake pads for the first time, 118,000 miles. I have a few questions I could't find answers for when searching the archives.

How do you remove the lock wedge? Just yank it straight out?

I was reading that some folks replace the lock nut? Is this the same thing as the big 2 9/16" nut?

Is it preferrable to use a tool to press in the new oil seal or can I just tap it in with a hammer and wooden block? If a tool is recommended, what tool is it and where do you get it?

Lastly, what kind of silcone is best to put on the edge of the seal before pressing it in?

THANKS !!

Just yank the lock straight out. If you are worried about the nylon in the lock nut (big 2 1/16 nut) just swap the nuts from side to side, now the lock will most likely bite virgin nylon. I would use fel-pro set and seal anaerobic sealer in the seal befor driving them home (a litle goes a long way here). just tap 'em in with a wooden block.
