I have a 97 3500 that is experiencing an idle problem. With the air on (seems to be sensitive to load) it will frequently stall when I come to a stop. I have also notices that if I punch the accelerator it will stall. This has gotten progressively worse over the last year. Is this a known problem and/or does anyone have any suggestions on how I could cure this problem?

Thanks for the pointer, but the thread was blank. Can you send me the pointer again? I am really looking forward to how you fixed this problem.

WD,

These are the specs for idle speed.

Automatic Transmission: 750-800 RPM w/ transmission in drive and AC ON.

Manual Trans: 780 RPM w/ trans in neutral and AC ON.

Make sure your engine is at normal operating temperature when adjusting.

Its not hard to adjust. A little confusing the first time.

Click on this thread for idle adjustment procedures: http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/technical/diesel/Dsl_idle.htm

My 96' Dodge Diesel recently went over
100,000 miles and began doing EXACTLY
what you described.

I re-adjusted the idle as the other
members have advised you and have had
no more problems for the last 2,000
miles.

Thanks to all. I did the adjustment and I now have a truck that keeps running at the stop sign (with one foot)! I did notice that the threaded rod on the linkage where the adjustment is bent. My local Dodge dealer must have cranked on it without loosening both lock nuts. Should this be replaced?

I am a bit concerned about the idle speed. I am guessing but I would say I am at around 850-875. My adjustment criteria was that with AC on and in drive I could punch the accelerator, quickly let up and the truck would continue to run. At any idle speed less than that it would stall. I have briefly read other posts about how they have adjusted their truck for very low idle speeds. I could not do this and keep the truck running properly (given my adjustment criteria). Is there another problem that I might have that needs to be addressed or is this just the nature of my engine?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.
